SUMMER SMORGASBAR LAUNCHES AT JONES BEACH

Market vendor food court and local-brewery beer garden

debuts Memorial Day Weekend,

open daily through Labor Day after June 13.

From Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day, a SmorgasBar featuring five to six food vendors booths alongside a shipping-container bar will be open at Jones Beach, at the Central Mall. In partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, this outdoor food court and beer garden will activate a long-dormant high-traffic parcel at the main entrance to Jones Beach, which attracts 4 million visitors annually.

The area  will include large tents for shade and eating and drinking, a sand play area with games such as badminton, bocce, and ping-pong, and special food events throughout the summer. “SmorgasBar: Brooklyn by the Beach” opens Memorial Day Weekend in time for the annual Bethpage Air Show, which attracts some 200,000 people daily.

Four food vendors from Smorgasburg will be open for the entire season: Handsome Hank’s Fish Hut (fish & chips, clams, shrimp), Home Frite (fresh-cut potato and sweet-potato Belgian-style fries and a yummy sausage), Rubirosa (the legendary Nolita pizza and pasta restaurant), and Summers (a South Williamsburg shop serving fresh juices and LA-style tacos). Two additional booths will feature rotating vendors, starting with El Gato Nacho, the popular Smorgasburg nachos stand, and Fleisher’s, the Brooklyn and Kingston, NY, butcher, serving grilled meats and sausages from sustainably operated New York State farms.

The bar will showcase Long Island breweries such as Southampton Publick House and Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, along with Kelvin Slush Co. frozen drinks (with or without alcohol), and a Friday-Sunday raw bar by Brooklyn Oyster Party (located inside the shipping-container bar).

SmorgasBar: Brooklyn by the Beach will be open Friday-Sunday from May 23 to June 15 (plus Monday, May 26), then daily through Labor Day. Tentative hours are 11:00am to 9:00pm.
