The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
Temporary Exhibit Opens Saturday, August 16, the 71st commissioning anniversary of Intrepid
Pilot Alfred Lerch’s log book, Collection of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Gift of the children of Alfred Lerch.
A collection of more than 60 artifacts of historical significance to the aircraft carrier Intrepid will make up the new temporary Objects in Conversation exhibition opening on Saturday, August 16 at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan. The exhibit will be open through June 8, 2015.
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum houses a collection of more than 9,000 historic objects, archives, photographs and film dating from Intrepid’s years as a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier from 1943 to 1974. Like each sailor who boarded the ship, every artifact has a unique story. Objects in Conversation shares stories from the Museum’s collections that no single object could tell on its own. The exhibit will feature objects that Intrepid crew members left behind, only to be discovered by Museum staff decades later; documents that tell the story of sailors who served side-by-side during World War II; and materials thathighlight the ways today’s Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum staff members care for the Museum and its collections, large and small.
The exhibit is free with the price of admission to the museum. For more information, visit www.intrepidmuseum.org.
