NYC to President Trump: Threat to Funding is Unacceptable, Unconstitutional and We Will Fight!

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio alongside Jim Johnson, head of the NYC Law Department, today announced that the city would be filing a suit in Seattle against the Federal Government. This comes in response to the Government’s aims to defund supposed “Lawless” & “Anarchist” cities.

“In a couple of hours in Seattle, we will file a complaint that is pushing back on, and seeks a court’s judgment on, the Trump administration’s decisions to withhold funding from cities that they have, without cause and without law, determined to be anarchist cities,” stated Mr. Johnson.

This all follows up on the President’s Memorandum, from September 2, wherein he deemed that that these cities should not and would not receive Federal Funding.

The President’s words: “My Administration will not allow Federal tax dollars to fund cities that allow themselves to deteriorate into lawless zones.  To ensure that Federal funds are neither unduly wasted nor spent in a manner that directly violates our Government’s promise to protect life, liberty, and property, it is imperative that the Federal Government review the use of Federal funds by jurisdictions that permit anarchy, violence, and destruction in America’s cities.”

A recent article in Politico by Brianna Ehley and Rachel Roubein has the following subtitle: “Documents show funding for a host of health programs is at risk under the president’s order targeting liberal strongholds.” It states that funds for Coronavirus relief, HIV treatment, screenings for newborns and other programs would be slashed to cities. Identified were the cities of New York, Washington D.C. and Portland.

The article identified the above mentioned document as being sent from the HHS (US Department of Health and Human Services) to the OMB (Office of Management and Budget). As of the time of this writing we could not find any directly related information.

On the very day of the President’s initial threat, NY Governor Cuomo had a number of choice words to share as a response.

Mayor de Blasio today: “What we’ve seen from President Trump, threatening funding for New York City and other cities, it’s morally wrong. It’s legally unacceptable. It’s unconstitutional. And we’re going to fight it. We’ve seen this not only directed at New York City, but at other cities that are trying to help their people, Seattle and Portland, that are trying to do the work of bringing their cities out of this crisis. Also being threatened with their funding being taken away by the federal government. So, here’s the bottom line – I said weeks ago, if the Trump administration persisted in trying to illegally take away funding from New York City, we would take them to court and we will beat them in court.”

Mr. Johnson also stated that the suit is being filed in Seattle due to the Government’s “deployment of federal troops in battle dress uniforms” there. Thus making it an appropriate place for the beginnings of this suit.
