The Annual Parade of Nations, part of the TCS New York City Marathon Opening Ceremony, illuminated Central Park on Friday, November 3, 2023, with a vibrant celebration of international unity and athleticism. Held just two days before the marathon, the event offered a dazzling kickoff to a weekend that highlights the power of sports to bring people together.

Set against clear skies and temperatures in the fifties, thousands of runners and spectators gathered on the marathon’s road path within Central Park, marching across the iconic finish line. Delegates from over 150 countries carried their national flags proudly, representing the diverse communities and cultures that make the NYC Marathon one of the world’s most inclusive sporting events.

The ceremony, presented by United Airlines, began with participants from the New York Road Runners’ community programs, who led the procession with enthusiasm and energy. They were followed by delegations from each participating country and territory, creating a colorful and joyous spectacle. One of the evening’s highlights was a woman dressed as “Lady Liberty” on stilts, embodying New York City’s tradition of welcoming people from around the globe.

The event wasn’t confined to the visual celebration. Music, cheers, and camaraderie filled the air as participants celebrated the universal themes of endurance, perseverance, and global unity. Attendees described the atmosphere as electric, with the crowd cheering on runners who would soon take on the ultimate challenge of the marathon itself.

The evening concluded with a fireworks display that lit up the skies over Central Park, marking the official start of the marathon weekend. The display symbolized the spirit of the marathon: a moment of brilliance, togetherness, and celebration shared by runners and spectators alike.

This year’s Parade of Nations once again captured the essence of the TCS New York City Marathon—a testament to the enduring power of sports to bridge divides and inspire people from every corner of the world.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the ceremonies begin with a dance performance by tribal representatives.
