By William Shakespeare
Music and Lyrics by Troy Anthony
Directed by Carl Cofield
This season, The Public Theater’s Public Works program presents a powerful choral adaptation of Pericles, Shakespeare’s epic tale of loss and rediscovery. Reimagined by playwright and songwriter Troy Anthony, this production is inspired by gospel music and the rousing power of the Black church, and will be performed by community members from across New York City at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
Pericles follows the journey of Prince Pericles of Tyre, who, after uncovering a dark secret in the court of Antioch, embarks on a series of adventures across the Mediterranean. Along the way, he faces shipwrecks, political intrigue, and personal loss, including the apparent deaths of his wife, Thaisa, and daughter, Marina. Years later, through a series of miraculous events, Pericles is reunited with his family, leading to a poignant conclusion that celebrates the themes of faith, resilience, and the enduring power of love.
Join in for this unique theatrical experience that brings together professional artists and community members to tell a story of transformation and hope.
