The festivities begin with a vibrant street fair from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM along 72nd Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, where visitors can enjoy authentic Japanese food, shop for crafts, and explore interactive cultural exhibits. The parade itself kicks off at 1:00 PM, starting at 81st Street and marching south down Central Park West to 67th Street. The opening ceremony will be held at 12:30 PM at the Grandstand Area near 70th and 71st Streets, just ahead of the main procession. Expect dazzling performances featuring everything from traditional Japanese drumming and martial arts to cosplay and anime-themed displays.
This year’s Grand Marshal is none other than celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto, famed for his role on Iron Chef, while Koji Sato, President of the Japanese American Association of New York, will serve as the honored community leader.
As a special prelude to the main event, the Japan Night Reception & Concert takes place the evening before, on Friday, May 9, at the Edison Ballroom (240 W. 47th Street). Doors open at 5:30 PM, with the show beginning at 7:00 PM. Guests will enjoy performances by the cast of Attack on Titan: The Musical, koto player Masayo Ishigure, and singer-songwriter Sayaka Yamamoto, alongside a sparkling sake tasting and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets for this special evening start at $75.
