LIVE at Culture Lab LIC- The Edukators and Guillaume Muller Trio

The Edukators are a melodic indie four-piece hailing from the socialist utopia of Jackson Heights, Queens, featuring a powerhouse lead singer & some dudes. The band consists of singer/guitarist/lyricist Sophia Rothman (currently crushing it in her first year of college), drummer David Rothman (no relation) (ok, just kidding, he’s her dad), guitarist Eric Cimino, and bassist Dan Catalano. The band’s latest, addictively catchy EP, How to be Alone, is out now on Magic Door Recordings.

A French guitarist based in New York City. Guillaume’s music draws influences from bebop and hard bop but with its own unique twist. He will be presenting new material from his upcoming second album, along with compositions from his debut album “Sketches of Sound” released in 2019.

Os Clavelitos is a samba/world music band based in New York City that performs Brazilian classics (samba, baiao, bossa nova, samba reggae) sung in Portuguese, as well as their original music that mixes Brazilian rhythms with English lyrics. They often incorporate batucada (percussion ensemble) into their shows and present an upbeat, high energy performance that gets people up and dancing!

Ben Freidkin & Omri Bar Giora’s Fusion Project is a tribute act to the Jazz Fusion greats – Miles Davis, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Allan Holdsworth, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and more. Founded and co-led by award-winning drummer Ben Freidkin (2020 Freddie Gruber Drum Set Award by PAS, George Bann Award for Best Jazz Performer) and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music Scholar, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Omri Bar Giora. They are joined by the spectacular Julia Chen on keys and Noam Tanzer on electric bass.

The sun-drenched beach towns of the Peruvian coast are home to the dynamic Afro-Peruvian music and dance style known as festejo, where layers of energetic percussion intermingle with piercing vocals and ornate guitar work to create an irresistibly danceable groove. The New York based band Festejation pays homage to this tradition while bringing their own decidedly urban edge to their music.

The group was started by bassist/arranger Edward Pérez, co-leader of the Grammy nominated Terraza Big Band, who has penned musical works for such groups as The Silkroad Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, Cristina Pato, and Peruvian Grammy nominee Jorge Pardo. This performance will feature special guest vocalist Alvaro Isla, on tour from Lima, Perú.

For New York-based trombonist and composer Amadis Dunkel the recent birth of his son Louis represents both a celebration of new life and the awesome energy that it brings with it, as well as a reminder of our intrinsic responsibility to make this world a better place for all new life.

This duality is reflected in Dunkel’s latest compositional exploration ‘Suite For Louis.’ Dunkel’s suite is grouped into two parts. The fist part is celebratory, it contains new compositions such as ‘Louis’ Lullaby’ and ‘Sunrise On Planet Nine’ which was recently featured at the Composer Concordance’s 10th annual festival in New York City. Part two deals with the dark side of our world: war, injustice etc.

Expect high energy and vast stylistic variety.

Lee Taylor doesn’t have a big discography or countless videos on YouTube, but what she lacks in online media is reinforced by boisterous vocal chops and spot-on charisma. And yes, she’s got more musical game than most “influencers” out on their showy platforms. Her live album Wild Woman, due out Friday, March 12th exemplifies this vocal force who rings comparisons from Dionne Warwick, Lily Allen, and Joss Stone. – Glide Magazine

LIVE at Culture Lab LIC- Hannah Ray & Sam Phelps, Screamin Rebel Angels, and Ska Orchestra

Sam Phelps is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter from Southern Kentucky whose music draws on country-roots heroes like Steve Earle and Jason Isbell. His forthcoming EP, Hunter Springs Road, produced by Grammy award winning artist Chance McCoy (Old Crow Medicine Show), and featuring guitar virtuoso Laur Joamets (Sturgill Simpson), will be released on November 4, 2021.

Screamin’ Rebel Angels’ unrelenting and hi-octane original music reimagines the legacy of rock ‘n roll, rockabilly, and rhythm ‘n blues into a contemporary sound. Their thrilling live performances are packed with primal passion and authenticity. The sound is unapologetically their own, and they take their audiences on an exhilarating adventure into an untamed world of dangerous women, broken hearts, courage and conviction.

Leading the band is Laura Palmer, a versatile multi-instrumentalist, song-writer, and producer. Equally adept at slapping out the rhythm on an upright bass or picking on a big ol’ Gretsch, Laura Palmer’s on stage presence and powerful vocals have garnered international attention and acclaim, including earning the 2020 Ameripolitan Award “Rockabilly Female of the Year.” Add in Brian Hack’s stratospheric lead guitar and additional song-writing, drummer Jungle Jim Chandler and the combination is a truly unique sound not to be missed. LIVE at Culture Lab LIC- Pigeonwing Dance, Daso, Brooklyners

“to cut a pigeon wing”:  The Dictionary of American Regional English.  To execute intricate dance steps gracefully…to dance in a fancy way.

Pigeonwing, named for its blend of airiness and NYC grit, was founded in 2016 by Guggenheim Fellow Gabrielle Lamb.  The Pigeons have been presented by NY City Center, 92Y’s Harkness Dance Festival, Bryant Park, and Jacob’s Pillow.  In 2018 the Pigeons were the first dance company commissioned by Symphony Space’s beloved “Selected Shorts”. Described by The New Yorker as “eccentric…playful…curious”, Pigeonwing Dance seeks the coordinates where beauty turns to awkwardness and tension dissolves into ease. Whirlwinds, accidents, and chance encounters are caught, preserved, and folded into dance. This improvisatory abandon is counterbalanced by meticulous calculation, revealing intricate architectures where fleeting moments of resolution open into new wonderings.

In 2005, David Soto began performing as Daso through his newly formed band. Daso Y El Grupo Cemi is a music ensemble that is very diverse in styles fusing Salsa Tropical, Hip Hop and Reggae which include references to his early influences of Afro Caribbean Rhythms – Bomba and Musica Jibara. This eclectic mix of styles is something he calls “Afro Caribbean Soul” music.

The Brooklyners play a cocktail of roots Reggae blending tastefully 3 part harmonies with a French twist surfing a heavy Caribbean rhythm section! While focussing on conscious reggae’s universal and timeless message of unity freedom and justice for all with the original material, you will discover that The Brooklyners are also known to transforming some iconic Parisian waltzes from Piaf, Brel, Brassens or Aznavour into a tropical journey!

For the past six years, The Brooklyners have played hundreds of shows and festivals such as Atlantic Antics or BEAT festival and some of NYC and East coast most popular landmarks : The Brooklyn Museum, The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, The Capitol Theater, Fairfield Theater Company, The Ardmore Music Hall, The Brooklyn Bowl.

Bright Dog Red, celebrated for “sublimely marrying jazz with hip-hop, funk, and electronic music” (JazzTimes), has long been “a fixture on the NYC jazz and improvisation scene” (Jazz Journal). The group’s “proudly unanchored improvisation” (Downbeat) has been described as “part Ornette Coleman and Prime Time, part Lounge Lizards, part A Tribe Called Quest” (JazzTimes).

Based in Albany, NY, Bright Dog Red has released five albums for Ropeadope. The group’s most recent offering, 2022’s Under the Porch, described as “genre-agnostic, uncategorizable, and intensely thrilling” by Glide Magazine, has earned the ensemble international acclaim.

LIVE at Culture Lab LIC- Harmony with Hunter and Zoo Berries

Harmony With Hunter is a live looping project from professional musician and multi-instrumentalist Michael Hunter. Michael has spent the past decade playing an unusually wide range of gigs in NYC, from drumming in metal bands to playing violin on Broadway. His most recent project involves “live looping”, where he combines his abilities as a multi-instrumentalist with looping pedal technology to create full band arrangements on the fly. Electric violin, keyboards, guitars, beatboxing and a soulful voice all combine organically, as Michael makes full use of the varied experience he’s collected as a professional musician in the NYC scene.

NYC based band Zoo Berries cruises with ease through the groove, sitting right at the intersection between Jazz, Gospel and Soul music.  Zoo Berries’ recent releases were dubbed as “the best aspects of traditional funk forms and contemporary compositions” and “feel like an impromptu D’Angelo jam session”

LIVE at Culture Lab LIC- Night Of The Living Funk and Square Won

Just like their trip across the Atlantic the Night of the Living Funk’s shows are about exiting your day to day and entering a funk injected dance party. Their influences range from The Black Exotics to Michael Jackson to Outkast and they perform an array of originals, covers, and arrangements. So be prepared for anything, who knows what’s going to happen? As Chris Lijoi exclaims, “We don’t, and that’s the beauty of it all.”

Based out of NYC, and playing in every borough and festival that will have us, we are a new funk-rock band with a bluesy twist. Engendered by the emotive force of Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the gospel of Ray Charles, the billowing horns of Tower of Power, and the tight, driving grooves of Stevie Wonder, we aim to blow the roof off of wherever we play.

How we envision our band to be for both ourselves and our audience is cathartic. We want to make you dance and feel relieved from start to finish. If you do not feel something by the time the set is over, your money back guaranteed.

2:00 pm – Join the Black Broadway community as they perform inspirational songs at the Darkness RISING: Live 5 Block Party! The 5th annual concert benefits Darkness RISING Nonprofit, a 501(c)3 organization which provides direct mental health resources to the Black community.

Darkness RISING: Live is a benefit concert featuring the Black Broadway community performing inspirational songs for Black mental health and Black mental health providers as guest speakers. This exciting event is hosted by Darkness RISING Project Nonprofit, a Black-led 501(c)3 organization which provides direct mental health resources to the Black community. Performers include stars from the Black Broadway community from shows such as MJ THE MUSICAL, TINA THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL, PARADISE SQUARE, MOTOWN, HAMILTON, DREAMGIRLS, AIN’T TOO PROUD, WICKED, THE COLOR PURPLE and more featuring Tony Award winner Lillias White! This event includes a vendor marketplace, food trucks, Black mental health professionals, wellness workshops, free resources, giveaways, live music, a DJ and more
