Intrepid Museum’s Free Fridays Kicks Off in April

Featuring special astronomy-themed programming, including talks, demos and stargazing

Intrepid Museum Free Fridays are back! Once again, the Museum is extending its hours with no cost of admissions from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm on select Fridays through September. Visitors are invited to enjoy special astronomy-themed programming aboard the storied WWII aircraft carrier Intrepid.

The 2024 Free Friday series will kick-off on April 26, and will feature an Astro Live presentation by Tim Straube, deputy manager of APS for NASA’s Orion spacecraft. Straube will lead a lively discussion on NASA’s work to return humans to the Moon under the Artemis campaign. Families and visitors with young children can enjoy demonstrations from Museum educators and participate in drop-in activities that include creating an astronaut portrait and building a lunar rover. Local astronomers will be on hand with their high-powered telescopes to help visitors navigate the night sky and answer questions about astronomy and stargazing. Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars or look through the telescopes of the experts.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available for the Astro Live and the Museum demonstrations as well as for telescope viewing on the flight deck.

Doors will open promptly at 5:00pm. Last entry to the Museum is at 8:30pm (doors are subject to close earlier, entry is not guaranteed). All visitors must enter through the Welcome Center to receive a ticket prior to entering the Museum.

While at the Museum, visitors can also explore the new temporary exhibition, Apollo: When We Went to the Moon, which highlights the remarkable history of humanity’s voyage beyond our home planet, and the extraordinary individuals who made it happen. The exhibition, along with the space shuttle Enterprise, is located in the Museum’s Space Shuttle Pavilion. Discover the historical journey of the Apollo missions through a unique blend of education and immersive experiences at the Intrepid Museum while marveling at the wonders of the space exploration.
