For nearly five decades, The Poetry Project has hosted an epic New Year’s Day celebration of poetry and its partners in artistic expression. This immersive day, stretching from dawn to dusk and beyond, welcomes hundreds of artists from every corner of the creative landscape. Poets, musicians, dancers, and performers of all disciplines join forces for a marathon of creativity, pushing boundaries and exploring new frontiers. From the moment the doors open to the final farewell, thousands of audience members participate in this global gathering of poetic exchange. Heartwarming and heartbreaking, electrifying and exhausting, the New Year’s Day Marathon is a cornerstone of The Poetry Project, a vibrant tapestry of artistic voices and shared experiences.
This bold undertaking is also The Poetry Project’s lifeblood. Funds raised from the Marathon fuel over 65 diverse events, reaching audiences worldwide. They support publications, fellowships, workshops, and the livelihoods of countless artists, scholars, and cultural visionaries. This continuous stream of support is vital for maintaining The Poetry Project’s thriving community, fostering an alternative economy for poetry, and upholding a vibrant counter-cultural legacy.
