The Cathedral Of St. John The Divine Observes Ash Wednesday
Wednesday, February 14
1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street)
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine will observe Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, with in-person services on Wednesday, February 14 at 12:15 pm and 7:30 pm at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street). Cathedral clergy will also provide ashes outside on the Cathedral’s West Front Stairs throughout the day, from 6:30 am – 12 pm and again from 1 pm – 4:30 pm.
At the 7:30 pm service, The Reverend Canon Steven Lee, Vicar, will preside and The Very Reverend Patrick Malloy, Dean of the Cathedral, will preach.
The Cathedral’s 12:15 pm and 7:30 pm services are joined by the Cathedral Choirs. The all-professional Cathedral Choir will sing the haunting “Miserere mei, Deus” of Gregorio Allegri and Ken Burton’s “A Prayer,” and the organ voluntary will be the “Elegy” by William Grant Still. The volunteer Cathedral Chorale joins for the evening service.
Both the midday and evening services will be held in person in the great space of the Cathedral. The 7:30 pm service will also be streamed on the Cathedral’s website and YouTube channel. All are welcome to receive the imposition of ashes from Cathedral clergy at either the 12:15 pm or 7:30 pm services, or outside the Cathedral’s front doors during the day.
The Cathedral will also be welcoming people to the Columbarium at 6pm for a gathering entitled “Love Never Ends.” People are invited to join together observing the confluence of Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day in conversation with others who understand the unique challenges of navigating love and grief.
