NY State Apple Picking List 2020

Within Driving Distance of NYC and Beyond

We had the fun experience of revisiting Apple Ridge Orchards in Warwick, NY recently. Just as we remember, it’s a joy to be going from tree to tree picking apples and walking about the outdoor air. With lovely panoramic views from the center of the orchards to petting their farm animals these folks are high on our list. Below is a video put together from our last visit.

It’s that time of year again boys and girls; that is, apple picking season. Unfortunately, here in NYC the closest most of us will come to picking apples is heading to the local fruit stand. It’s not exactly the same thing as literally picking your own apples at an orchard, is it?

According to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, our state is the second largest producer of apples in America. We’re surpassed by Washington State. The US Dept. of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Services puts 2016’s production numbers for NY State at 1.18 billion pounds from 40,000 harvest acres. That’s a heck of a lot of apples!

So, where does one go to see and pick these apples? Good question, but not a hard one to answer. New Yorkled has a list below of ‘pick your own’ orchards that are within reasonable driving distance of Manhattan. ‘Reasonable’, meaning it won’t take you all day to get there. The farthest locale might be 2 hours we’d say with others only a hour away or so. Keep in mind that some of these places also have pumpkin picking as well as seasonal events such as hay rides, tours, petting zoos, pony rides and more. It would thus behoove you to search out their websites and investigate further what their visiting hours are; and to see what events might be going on at each respective site.

Mind you, in a search through the above mentioned NYSDA I stumbled upon a few locales in Long Island, NY. They’ve been listed below as well.
