NY Governor Cuomo sending Enforcement Personnel to COVID-19 Hotspots

Out of concern over 20 COVID-19 hotspot zip codes, NY Governor Cuomo today said that personnel will be deployed to these locations for the sake of enforcing state health guidelines and laws.

It would be modeled after the taskforce (made up of State Police and Liquor Authority Inspectors) that’s been seeing to the enforcement at and around NYC alcohol serving establishments for months now. The governor stated that such enforcement has already been underway and is to increase in the coming week.

Mr. Cuomo’s announcement came during his telephone press conference held an hour prior to NYC Mayor de Blasio’s own briefing.

The Mayor spoke of the very zip codes referenced by the Governor. 9 of the 20 are the worst of the lot and would be placed on lock-down pending the approval of the state. 11 are not as bad yet still worrisome and are to have highest risk activities restricted.

“Local governments have not done an effective job of enforcement in these hot spot ZIP codes. The State will be doing aggressive enforcement starting tomorrow,” Governor Cuomo said. “As we saw with bars and restaurants, when the State initiated enforcement actions compliance greatly increased. However, the State cannot take over effective enforcement for every jurisdiction and if a local jurisdiction cannot or will not perform effective enforcement of violating entities, notify the State and we will close all business activity in the hot spots where the local governments cannot do compliance.

Last week the Governor stated that there would be no need to scale back reopening just yet. Since then the numbers have become more concerning as has the spread of the disease.
