Two Major FDNY Unions Endorse Andrew Cuomo for NYC Mayor
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s mayoral campaign picked up significant momentum this week with the endorsement of two major FDNY unions: the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) and the United Fire Officers Association (UFOA). The UFA represents over 20,000 firefighters, while the UFOA represents 7,500 fire officers and supervisors. Together, they praised Cuomo’s leadership, his record on public safety, and his consistent support for first responders.
Leaders from both unions cited Cuomo’s decisive action during the COVID-19 pandemic, his expansion of benefits for 9/11 responders, and his commitment to strengthening the city’s civil service system. UFA President Andrew Ansbro highlighted Cuomo’s role in ensuring PPE access and support when the city was in crisis, while UFOA President James Brosi pointed to Cuomo’s efforts to protect pensions, expand safety infrastructure, and advocate for merit-based public service.
The endorsements add to a growing list of labor and political support for Cuomo’s candidacy, including backing from 1199SEIU, Teamsters Joint Council 16, and the Hotel Trades Council. Cuomo has long positioned himself as a pro-labor leader, championing wage increases, infrastructure investment with union labor, and worker protections. The fire unions join a coalition of lawmakers, community leaders, and advocacy groups rallying behind Cuomo’s “Save Our City” campaign.
