Madison Avenue will have a prominent role in the 7th annual NYCxDESIGN by sponsoring Madison Avenue: High Fashion & Historic Preservation – An Architectural Walking Tour with the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

NYC historic district regulations have played a major role in maintaining Madison Avenue’s landmark status. Madison Avenue: High Fashion & Historic Preservation is an Architectural Walking Tour discovering the history behind the landmark buildings. John Arbuckle, AIA Preservationist and Architectural Tour Guide will lead the tour. Design and fashion enthusiasts will discover how high fashion retail has been incorporated to create a contemporary shopping destination. This event is free and open to the public on Tuesday, May 14, and Tuesday, May 21 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

Madison Avenue BID will also present an outdoor art exhibition by students of the School of Visual Art’s 3D Design & BFA Interior Design Departments: “Hemlines From Skylines: Architectural Fashion Sculptures On Madison Avenue.

Each artist selected one iconic NYC skyscraper or institution as inspiration for a dress. Displayed in eight foot “glass cases” the sculptures celebrate 1930s icons while also featuring modern architectural developments and monuments in NYC. Curated by 3D Design Chair Kevin O’Callaghan, and BFA Interior Design Chair Dr. Carol Bentel, in partnership with the Madison Avenue BID. This exhibition will be on view from May 10 – 22.

Madison Avenue BID has partnered with Galerie Magazine to host “Landmarks of Style: Modern Interpretations of Timeless Architecture” – a conversation with editor-in-chief Jacqueline Terrebonne and her panel of leading architects & interior designers. Co-hosted by the Madison Avenue BID in celebration of ” Madison Avenue: High Fashion & Historic Preservation.” Following the talk, Galerie Magazine will invite their guests to join them for a walk on Madison to view the landmark buildings and experience the contemporary interiors created by the brands at participating boutiques.

The 12th Annual World Science Festival in NYC
May 22 – Jun 2 all-day

The 12th Annual World Science Festival

May 22 – June 2, 2019

Announces 2019 Programming

And Invites New Yorkers To

‘Awaken Their Inner Genius’

New York, NY (May 2, 2019) – The World Science Festival has unveiled its 2019 program lineup, which presents many of the world’s leading scientists, pioneers, artists, and influential thinkers – bringing science to life in imaginative ways throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

The Festival, beginning Wednesday, May 22nd, celebrates science with original programming that includes discourse, debate, theatre, film, workshops, and interactive installations as well as events for young innovators, scientists-in-the-making, and families. The Festival transforms the city and brings the world’s leading scientists to advance our understanding and appreciation of everything from quarks to the cosmos.

Tracy DayCo-Founder and CEO of the World Science Festival, has long been an advocate of bringing significant scientific discussions to wider audiences. “We are thrilled to offer an exciting line-up of programming, with leaders in their fields engaging the public in conversations that encourage all to be champions of scientific truth and human curiosity.”

“This year we are celebrating the anniversaries of both the confirmation of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and also the Apollo moon landing, two gratifying moments of insight and exploration,” said Columbia University physicist Brian Greene, Co-Founder of the World Science Festival. “These astonishing milestones are an opportunity for us all to recognize the enormous capacity of humankind to achieve the seemingly impossible.”

Kicking off this year’s festivities, The World Science Festival Gala will be held on May 22nd, 2019, featuring an original production of Light Falls: Space, Time, and an Obsession of Einstein, which tells the dramatic story of Einstein’s electrifying discovery of the General Theory of Relativity. The production, narrated by Brian Greene, features an all-Broadway cast, innovative 3D visuals designed by the Tony Award-winning 59 Productions (“An American in Paris”), and an original score by Jeff Beal (“House of Cards”). Light Falls premieres nationwide Wednesday, May 29—the 100th anniversary to the day of Einstein’s Theory being confirmed through astronomical observations—at 10/9c on PBS (check local listings), pbs.org/lightfalls and the PBS Video app.

Now in its 12th year, the World Science Festival continues to bring the power of science to new audiences. This year’s programming will feature some of the most brilliant scientists, seasoned explorers, and influential performers, including Apollo astronaut Michael Collins, inventor of CRISPR Jennifer Doudna, chess icon Garry Kasparov, Grammy-winning composer Eric Whitacre, commander of the International Space Station Scott Kelly, actress and activist Marlee Matlin, renowned AI researcher Yann LeCun, and more.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MAIN STAGE WILL INCLUDE:

Rethinking Thinking: How Intelligent Are Other Animals?: Intelligence was once thought to be uniquely human, but what is intelligence? Why do some species get an extra dose? And just how special are humans, really? Participants include: biologist Simon Garnier, neuroscientist Suzana Herculano-Houzel, and marine mammalogist Denise Herzing. Author, journalist, and comedian Faith Salie will moderate.

Physics in the Dark: Searching for the Universe’s Missing Matter: For nearly a century, evidence has mounted that the gravitational pull necessary to keep clusters of galaxies intact, as well as stars within galaxies from flying apart, requires far more matter than we can see. Problem is, such “dark matter” has also eluded one specially designed detector after another. Which raises the big question: What if we have failed to find dark matter because it isn’t there? Participants include: physicist Mariangela Lisanti, astrophysicist Joseph Silk, physicist Erik Verlinde, and astrophysicist Risa Wechsler. Physicist and author Brian Greene will moderate.

The Richness of Time: Time on Earth elapses at a uniform rate, so why does the human experience of time seem so varied? How do various neurological afflictions change the perception of time? And underneath it all, how does human language impact our ability to think about time and fully experience its rich and mysterious contours? Participants include: cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky and neuroscientist Dean Buonomano. Physicist and author Brian Greene will moderate.

Loose Ends: String Theory and the Quest for the Ultimate TheoryThirty-five years ago string theory took physics by storm, promising the coveted unified theory of nature’s forces that Einstein valiantly sought but never found. In the intervening decades, string theory has brought a collection of mind-boggling possibilities into the lexicon of mainstream thinking—extra dimensions of space, holographic worlds, and multiple universes. Some researchers view these developments as symptoms of string theory having lost its way. Others argue that string theory, although very much still a work in progress, is revealing stunning new qualities of reality. Participants include: physicists Lara AndersonMichael DineMarcelo Gleiser, and Andrew Strominger. Physicist and author Brian Greene will moderate.

Revealing the Mind: The Promise of Psychedelics: Nearly every culture throughout history has used chemicals that alter consciousness for spiritual exploration. In the 20th century these drugs caught the attention of scientists. Join scientists and “psychonauts” who are now picking up where research left off 50 years ago, experimenting with LSD and other psychedelics to heal—and reveal—the mind. Participants include: psychologist Alison Gopnik, addiction psychiatrist Stephen Ross, and neuroscientist Anil Seth.

Making Room for Machines: Getting Ready for AGI: The “thinking machines” that Alan Turing postulated in 1950 have already vaulted beyond us in specific arenas like chess and Jeopardy. But if we achieve artificial general intelligence, it may take only seconds for our creation to surpass us in every other arena as well. Will humans fight to restrain such super intelligence, or join forces, perhaps bringing about a new utopia? Or, will we simply and quietly become irrelevant? Participants include: writer, activist, and chess champion Garry Kasparov, computer scientist Yann LeCun, roboticist Hod Lipson, and AI ethicist Shannon Vallor.

The Right Stuff: What It Takes to Boldly GoFifty years ago, as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin bounced on the moon’s surface below, Apollo 11 Command Module Pilot Michael Collins briefly disappeared behind the lunar disk, becoming the first person to experience space entirely alone. As we set our sights on the stars, space travelers will need to cope with ever longer stretches in the lonely environs of the cosmos. What will that take? How will it affect who we are? Participants include: astronaut Michael Collins, astronaut Scott Kelly, and astronaut Leland Melvin. Journalist and producer Miles O’Brien will moderate.

FUN, FASCINATING, AND FREE ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES WILL INCLUDE:

Saturday Night Lights: Stargazing in Brooklyn Bridge Park: Immerse yourself in stargazing and storytelling. First, step up to a professional telescope for an intimate look at the Moon, Jupiter, and beyond. Then, sit on the grass for “Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of our Universe,” created by Grammy® Award-winning composer Eric Whitacre. This short film experience reveals the galaxy from the perspective of the Hubble Space Telescope as 100 members of the LaGuardia High School Senior Chorus provide a celestial soundscape. Stay for an engaging discussion with astrophysicists and the film’s creators.

City of Science: A larger-than-life touring event where the magic of science, technology, engineering, and math collide! Filled with interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities, and engaging exhibitions, this free program unleashes everyone’s inner scientist.

Great Fish Count: From Lemon Creek in Staten Island to the shores of the Bronx River, New York’s waterways are teeming with life—and it’s up to you to find it! Led by  top marine scientists and biologists in 16 sites across New York’s five boroughs, Yonkers, and New Jersey, the Great Fish Count gives attendees of all ages the chance to strap on a pair of waders, cast a net, and discover the underwater world in their own backyard.

The full program lineup for the 2019 World Science Festival can be found here, where tickets for Festival events can also be purchased.

Todd Crow is a pianist whose artistry has brought him critical superlatives in the U.S. and notably in England – there largely through regular appearances on the BBC. The New York Times has described his playing as “heroic, [showing] endless flair, color and stamina.” The Times of London has praised his performances as “spine-chilling” and “exhilarating,” and The Wall Street Journal said that his playing exhibited “stunning control and a wonderful sense of musical architecture.”

Todd was a member of the Vassar College faculty for 49 years, retiring in June 2018 as the George Sherman Dickinson Professor of Music. The Vassar College Department of Music is presenting Todd Crow in recital at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, March 23, 2019, at 7:30 pm. His program is a hearty meal of virtuoso pianism: Mendelssohn’s Fantasy in F-sharp minor, Op. 28; Schumann’sKreisleriana, Op. 16; Debussy’s Etude No. 10 “pour les Sonorités opposées”; Three Préludes by Henri Dutilleux; and Bartók’s Dance Suite.

Thomas Sauer, a colleague of Todd Crow’s at Vassar, had this to say: “It was my good fortune to have served on the Vassar piano faculty with Todd Crow for 19 years. He was the kindest, most selfless and generously supportive colleague imaginable, and his personal pianistic standards would be the envy of a performer at any stage of a performing career.”

“Many of his colleagues consider him to be a pianist’s pianist,” wrote the critic Jed Distler on ClassicsToday about Chopin: The Late Mazurkas (MSR, 2018), Crow’s latest in a series of distinguished recordings that have earned him a string of critical acclaim over the years. Two discs in particular of performances recorded for BBC broadcast – Todd Crow: The BBC Recordings, Volume 1 (2010), music of Mendelssohn, Mendelssohn/Liszt, Moscheles, and Schumann; and Volume 2 (2013), piano variations of Brahms and Dvorák – elicited from Fanfare magazine what is perhaps definitive praise for this pianist, calling him “…among the aristocrats of keyboard artists,” and saying this: “Todd Crow is an American treasure. He combines a solid technique and beautiful keyboard touch with complete mastery of the music.”

In recent years he has appeared as soloist with orchestras in the United States, England, Italy, Israel, the Czech Republic, and elsewhere, and in recital or chamber music at the Berlioz/Dutilleux Festival in Manchester, England, Washington’s National Gallery of Art, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. He has performed frequently with such groups as the Brentano, Borromeo, Composers, Concord, Shanghai, Miami, Daedalus, Jupiter, Miró, Parker, Dover and Escher string quartets, the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, and with many eminent soloists including famed jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman.  He made his Carnegie Hall debut as soloist with the American Symphony in 1992 and his London orchestral debut at the Barbican Centre with the London Philharmonic in 1986.  He has been heard on BBC Radio for many years in both live and recorded performances, and on National Public Radio in the USA, as well as many other American radio stations.

Since 1996, he has been music director and pianist of the Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber Music in Northeast Harbor, Maine, now looking forward to its 55th season. In addition to frequent appearances at the Bard Music Festival, he has been heard at the Casals Festival, Music Mountain, Maverick Concerts, and other festivals. His CDs include sonatas of Haydn and Schubert, Liszt’s transcription for piano solo of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, works of Sergei Taneyev and Dohnányi, the complete works for cello and piano by Mendelssohn (with cellist Mark Shuman), and Ernst Toch’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the NDR-Hamburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leon Botstein. Released in 2016, a CD entitled Of Love of You–A Tribute to Emery W. Harper features world premiere recordings of new American works for piano, soprano, and bass-baritone by Bolcom, Liebermann, Rands, Stucky, Del Tredici, Wyner, and others. Todd Crow can also be heard on the Albany, ASV, Bridge, First Impression, Golden String, New World, and Toccata Classics labels.

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Todd Crow is an honors graduate of the University of California and The Juilliard School. Among his teachers have been Erno Dániel, Ania Dorfmann, and at the Music Academy of the West, Emanuel Bay. At the age of 13 he was awarded an indefinitely renewable scholarship for the study of music composition by the Epstein Foundation of Chicago, and as a teenager he won prizes for his works including a competition sponsored by the National Society of Arts and Letters.  At age fifteen, he won the Santa Barbara Symphony Young Artists Competition.  He is also editor of the volume Bartók Studies (Detroit, 1976).  In 1986 he received the University of California’s Distinguished Alumni Award. www.toddcrowpiano.com

Monica Weiss, ETHICAL NYC Co-Chair of the Environmental Stewardship Committee, interviews three young, inspiring climate activists:

XIYE BASTIDA spoke about the challenges that youth face because of the climate crisis at the 2018 UN World Urban Forum 9. She received the Spirit of the United Nations Award for her environmental work. A junior at Beacon H.S., Xiye is the leader of the school’s Environmental Club and has worked with Action for Sustainable Development (A4SD) and numerous other climate organizations to communicate the implications of the existing climate crisis, among other issues.

COLLEEN SCHMIDT, an undergraduate studying Environmental Biology, is originally from Bozeman, Montana, where she grew up exploring rivers and mountains, developing a deep love for landscapes and wildlife. Her appreciation for the natural world has only increased through her studies of its complexity, resilience, and interconnectedness. The mission of the Sunrise Movement is the building of “an army of young people to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process” through political action.

ALEXANDRIA VILLASEÑOR, a 7th grader, who — frustrated by the lack of progress of the UN Climate Change Conference in Poland, and inspired by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Alexandria — became a national and international organizer for the first-ever global youth climate strike on March 15, 2019, mobilizing nearly 2,000 youths from 123 countries to demand climate action from their world leaders. Alexandria was awarded the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival’s “Disruptor” Award and The Common Good Foundation’s Changemaker Scholarship and is on Politico’s list of the top 100 people influential in climate change policy. Alexandria continues in her role as a prominent climate strike organizer, and is working to bring accurate climate science and climate change education into K-12 schools. This week’s shared charity is Zero Hour, whose mission is to center the voices of diverse youth in the conversation around climate and environmental justice. Zero Hour is a youth-led movement creating entry points, training, and resources for new young activists and organizers (and adults who support their vision) wanting to take concrete action around climate change.

NEW YORK, NY – On Sunday, May 26, 2019, the largest Latinx celebration in Lower Manhattan returns for a 32nd year. Strong Roots, Healthy Branches: Harvesting Connections, the Festival theme, pays tribute to the Loisaida Inc.’s Puerto Rican roots and longstanding commitment to the Lower East Side.

As always, the festivities commence at 11 a.m. with a Community Parade featuring the work of Garbagia , an eco-urban recycled arts initiative that will work throughout the month at the Loisaida Center with local artists and residents to conduct art building workshops to create instruments, flower masks, ‘vejigantes,’ paper mache animal masks, and other props—with an emphasis on recycled and found materials.

On the Festival Main Stage, host Awilda Rodriguez Lora will introduce an eclectic mix of Latinx musical acts, including the Lower East Side’s very own, Son del Monte , led by renowned timablero Manuel Rivera , who will be performing their take on the Cuban charanga. The lineup also includes Puerto Rican pleneros La Maquina Insular , whose lineup features Hector “Tito” Matos and other members of Viento de Agua , a group known for revitalizing the Puerto Rican musical traditions of bomba y plena. Making their Festival debut will be Nuyorican experimental salsa orchestra, Abrazos Army . Rounding out the main stage lineup will be Afro-Cuban dancer Yesenia Selier and Puerto Rican theatre troupe, Y No Había Luz.

Y No Había Luz will also perform as part of the 6th Annual Festival Theater Lab . The family-friendly event will move to the street-level this year as part of the festival’s street vendor fair along Avenue C or what is known as the Loisaida Commercial Corridor (E. 6th Street to E. 12th Street.). After the successful debut of their post-Hurricane play ¡Ay Maria! at last year’s Festival, Puerto Rican/Latin American theatre collective Mezcolanza will again host a series of one-act performances. Plenatoriom , a Puerto Rican plena initiative housed at Loisaida, and the improv comedy troupe Teatro 220 will also perform, followed by the closing Community Pageant.

The free Memorial Day Concert at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine features Bruckner’s Eighth. “Beauty is what Bruckner is talking about,” says Jaap van Zweden. In this symphony beauty takes many forms: its gradual unfolding, burnished brass sonorities, soaring lyricism, and a triumphant ending. An inspiring, spiritual way to remember those who died while serving in America’s armed forces.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the performance; ticket distribution will begin at 5:00 PM. The audio of the performance will be broadcast onto the adjacent Pulpit Green, weather permitting.

Candid Conversations About Death

New Dates Added for Green-Wood’s Popular Death Café

Tuesdays, May 14 – July 9, 2019
6:30 – 8:00 pm

Green-Wood – 25th Street at 5th Avenue, Brooklyn – Modern Chapel

Take the “R” train to 25th Street in Brooklyn and walk up the hill one block and into the Cemetery.

Free parking is available.

This event is free.  Reservations are recommended.  To make an online reservation, visit www.green-wood.com/toursevents or call 718-210-3080

Green-Wood’s Death Café continues in spring and summer. In a small group, participants will share their thoughts on death and dying in a supportive environment where they can feel comfortable talking about these universal, but rarely discussed, topics.

The Death Café is inspired by centuries-old European salons where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical, political, or scientific ideas. The first Death Café was started by British entrepreneur Jon Underwood in 2010 as a way to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” To date, over 5,000 of these meetings have taken place in countries around the world.

Green-Wood’s death educator Amy Cunningham, an independent funeral director, leads the Death Café. Light refreshments will be served.

CELEBRATE ISRAEL PARADE 2019

Sunday, June 2, 2019
11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Parade to be held on Fifth Avenue from 57th to 74th Streets

The 2019 Celebrate Israel Parade, one of the largest events in New York City, is back for the 55th year on Sunday, June 2, from 11 AM to 4 PM, marching up Fifth Avenue from 57th to 74th Streets, Manhattan.

Fifth Avenue will once again turn blue and white as more than 30 floats, musical performers, 15 world-class marching bands, and 40,000 marchers entertain hundreds of thousands of spectators for the largest celebration of Israel in the world.

This year’s Parade will welcome Edward A. Mermelstein, Founder and CEO of One & Only Realty and President of ZAKA, as the Grand Marshall.

The 2019 creative theme for marching groups and floats is “Only in Israel,” after the famed Hebrew song Rak B’Yisrael. Each group or float will include colorful banners, costumes, and props related to the theme in some way in a show of unity and pageantry for Israel.

The Parade will take place rain or shine. For the latest information on the Celebrate Israel Parade, please visit the Parade website at www.celebrateisraelny.org or follow us on [email protected] or visit our Facebook page: Celebrate Israel Parade.
