Tiffany Shlain and Nigel Savage talk idolatry in the age of the iPhone. This program is part of a spring program series exploring the Ten Commandments at Eldridge Street. Sunday, September 30 from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm

(New York, NY) – Affordable Art Fair NYC is pleased to announce a full series of programming highlighting emerging talent and thoughtfully curated exhibitions on view this fall at the Metropolitan Pavilion from September 27 to 30, 2018. In addition to showcasing original contemporary art, featuring over 400 artists exhibited by 74 international and national galleries, Affordable Art Fair NYC’s curatorial programs encourage visitors to experience and engage with special artist presentations.

The Young Talent Exhibition is a dedicated platform that supports emerging artists and curators within the contemporary art community. This fall, Affordable Art Fair NYC will present a solo exhibition by New York-based and self-taught photographer, painter, and mixed-media artist Chase Hall, curated by Lolita Cros. A native Parisian, Cros has been making waves as an independent curator with her unorthodox venue choices and unique visual lens. She is currently curator and art consultant for The Wing co-working and community spaces designed for women.

“We are excited to be giving a platform to such a multifaceted and critical artist like Chase Hall,” says Vanessa Seis, Fall Fair Director, Affordable Art Fair NYC. “His work is extremely relevant in that it addresses the visual history of racial bigotry in the United States, and I hope that this exhibition will stimulate powerful conversation among our visitors.”

Affordable Art Fair NYC’s Limited Edition Print, a print series in collaboration with a commissioned artist made exclusively for the fall edition, will feature a collection of 10 limited edition artworks by London-based artist Adam Bridgland. The screen print with spray paint overlays is a love letter to the urban wilderness that is New York City, and a thematic continuation of a sculptural work Bridgland created earlier this year.

The Curatorial Excellence Award (FKA Best Booth Award) is a continued initiative presented by Affordable Art Fair NYC to highlight thoughtful and engaging gallery presentations. The award will be granted to an exhibition of curatorial distinction and the gallery will receive automatic acceptance into the following fall edition. The winner will be selected by a notable jury including Annelien Bruins, CEO of Tang Art Advisory, Wendy Goodman, Design Editor at New York Magazine and Design Hunting, Julia Halperin, Executive Editor at Artnet, and Melanie Kress, Associate Curator for High Line Art.

Affordable Art Fair NYC expresses great appreciation to its fair partners this fall, including New Camerata Opera, The Art Therapy Project, Butterfield Catering, The Non-Violence Art Project, Van Gogh Vodka, Austin Eastciders, ShortStems, Reed Photographic, TBS Tramo, Yotel New York and SPACE design + production. Media Partners include: artnet, ARTnews, artprice.com, Art Zealous, New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and Observer. Cultural Partners include: American Folk Art Museum, ArtTable, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, International Print Center New York (ICPNY), The Jewish Museum, Tang Art Advisory and Young Professionals in the Arts NYC.

ABOUT THE AFFORDABLE ART FAIR

The following is from last year so’s to help give you a better idea as to what to expect:

Guests are invited to bring their own pets to receive a special blessing

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine celebrates the beauty of the animal kingdom and the dignity of all creatures with a ceremony and special blessing for animals large and small, at the 33rd annual Feast of Saint Francis and Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 1st from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street) in Manhattan.

This signature Cathedral service features the Missa Gaia (or Earth Mass), composed by Paul Winter and Paul Halley. The Paul Winter Consort is joined by a massed choir of hundreds of voices conducted by Director of Cathedral Music Kent Tritle, with modern and traditional African dance performances by Forces of Nature Dance Theatre. The unique ceremony concludes with the Procession of the Animals down the Nave of the Cathedral.

The day is a celebration of the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and his advocacy for harmony between human beings and the natural world. Following the procession, guests are welcomed to enjoy an outdoor fair from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with pet blessings, activities, refreshments and performances.

Guests are encouraged to bring their pets to the Cathedral to be a part of the celebration and to receive a special blessing. In years past, thousands of dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and their owners have attended the event. Pet blessings begin on the Cathedral’s outdoor Pulpit Green at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public, though contributions to help support the service are gratefully welcomed. Day-Of Passes will be available on the morning of the event. It is recommended that visitors arrive as early as possible for pass distribution.

Performances, costume competition, witches’ cauldron enchant downtown

Visit this page to learn about purchasing tickets!

…and scroll down to read more about this grand annual event.

NEW YORK — Nonstop theater, music, dance a costume competition and ballroom dancing will bewitch the East Village at Theater for the New City’s annual Village Halloween Costume Ball on Wednesday, October 31 at TNC, 155 First Avenue.

Join us as the one-night fiesta takes over all four of TNC’s theater spaces, plus its lobby and the block of East Tenth Street between First and Second Avenues in a party and evening filled with performances capped with a costume contest.

Outdoor entertainment is 4-7 pm; doors open 7:30 pm. Admission is $20 with costume or formal wear required. Once inside, everything is free except food and drink, which are graveyard dirt-cheap. Tickets are available at (212) 254-1109 or by clicking the TIX link.

Customarily, more than 1,500 wildly-clad celebrants gather for dancing, dining, showing off costumes and viewing acts from the cutting-edge of cabaret and theater.

“The whole subterranean world is coming to the mainstream,” TNC Executive Director Crystal Field said. “The Circadian rhythm has been disrupted.”

In this party on a very wild Wednesday night, performances, music, dance, theater and more fill TNC as downtown becomes Halloween central.

With its Witches’ Cauldron, the event can justifiably claim to have downtown’s most sensational Halloween cafe with a variety of American and international delicacies available at peoples’ prices.

“The Witches’ Cauldron is where you get food and entertainment,” Field said of this space transformed from a theater into a dining area complete with entertainment.

Holiday dishes are contributed by neighboring East Village restaurants, including some with celebrity chefs.

You can gobble Halloween fare while enjoying spine-tingling performances by performance artists, songwriters and more.

“Hell souls are performing,” Field said of figures who perform as part of the evening’s entertainment.

Lissa Moira leads a scream contest in which the audience is asked to join in as part of this work that seeks to bring out the Halloween spirit.

“I get people on stage and I punctuate the whole piece with screams,” she said. “They scream for bottles of champagne and cash and all kinds of prizes. It’s fabulously interactive.”

Since its beginning in 1977, TNC’s Halloween extravaganza has been a point of origin for many of New York City’s most original entertainers.

Six full-length plays have grown out of playlets written for the festival and performance art found an early home in the festival.

It also has been a launching pad for such formative artists as Paul Zaloom, Alice Farley, Bloolips, The Red Mole, Penny Arcade, Basil Twist and Alien Comic Tom Murrin. Each year, many acts, skits, sketches, and skadoodles go on to become the basis of larger theater works.

TNC originated the Village Halloween Parade as part of its annual Halloween Ball, before the parade itself split off as a separate event.

Scattered through the event will be stilt dancers, jugglers, fire-eaters, Vaudeville playlets. Join us as we tap into the Halloween spirit – from costumes to other forms of artistic creativity – as the party itself becomes the biggest performance.

Theater for the New City is located at 155 First Avenue, at the corner of East Tenth Street. Reservations are strongly recommended. The TNC box office number is (212) 254-1109.

November 28, 2018 – January 4, 2019

November 27: Light Up Luminaries
5:30 – 8:00 pm

Light Up Luminaries signals the start of the holiday season with an evening full of fun and holiday cheer as Brookfield Place celebrates the spectacular light installation and holiday tradition. Enjoy free ice skating on the waterfront, sweet treats, and performances by the Original Dickens Carolers and Joe McGinty and The Loser’s Lounge!

Luminaries is a mesmerizing holiday light installation created by the LAB at Rockwell Group for Brookfield Place. The display is inspired by the season’s traditions of sharing, giving, and community. Visitors are encouraged to watch light shows every half hour and send wishes to the canopy above from the glowing wishing stations. Brookfield will donate $1, up to $25,000, for every wish sent during the holiday season to Little Essentials, a New York City based non-profit that improves the health, safety, and well-being of children living in poverty by providing urgently needed resources and parenting education to families in crisis.

  • Light Shows: 8 am – 10 pm

NEW YORK, NY – There are many things that make New York City a special place to be during the holidays. Nowhere else can you see the ice skaters at Bryant Park, the amazing window displays in the big department stores, and the spectacular Rockefeller Center tree. Then, of course, there are the markets. So. Many. Markets. How to decide?

The NY Handmade Collective, formerly known as the Etsy NY Team, calls this great city home, and wants to extend its joys of the season to your shopping experience! Our 11th annual Holiday Handmade Cavalcade stands out from the crowd of events by featuring over 60 makers based in the tri-state area at three exciting locations in two boroughs.

Our first market will take place on Small Business Saturday weekend, November 24-25, from 11am-6pm at the Invisible Dog, located at 51 Bergen St. in Brooklyn. Next up is our week-long pop-up inside Chelsea Market, December 3-9 from 10:30am – 7:30pm, 75 9th Ave. in Manhattan. Finally, on December 15-16, visit us at the Brooklyn Historical Society from 11am-6pm at 128 Pierrepont St. in Brooklyn.

We are so proud to be the only all-volunteer, vendor-run handmade market in NYC, and we bring the same imagination that we use in our work to the production of our retail events. Each Cavalcade marketplace will offer a carefully crafted selection of vendors to make sure you have the greatest variety of handmade goods to see, feel, touch, smell, and fall in love with, including jewelry, greeting cards, art, beauty products, clothing, baby items, and more. We’ll also have interactive demos courtesy of Blick Art Materials, for you to get in touch with your inner artist, and we’ll be giving away special gifts and prizes via our raffles!

We know our sense of community shines through when we come together, and this is one reason why our 2017 Cavalcade drew more than 30,000 visitors. Our personalized service, which allows us to connect with customers in a unique and meaningful way, is the final step in our creative process, which we think results in happier gift-givers and recipients!

For 2018, we’re thrilled to be sponsored by partners who share our appreciation for handmade goods, quality, and craftsmanship: Blick Art Materials, Etsy, Fine & Raw Chocolate, and Pilot Kombucha.

Franklin Sirmans (Director of the Perez Art Museum Miami) also joins the fair to oversee this year’s tribute section celebrating the enduring legacy of Linda Goode Bryant and her pivotal New York gallery, Just Above Midtown (JAM). New York Handmade Collective (NYHC) in collaboration with Grand Bazaar
100 West 77 Street & Columbus Ave., NY, NY

New York, NY (April 1, 2019) –For the fourth time in partnership with Grand Bazaar USA, the NY Handmade Collective (NYHC) – formerly known as the Etsy NY Street Team – will present “The NY Handmade Collective Pop-Up Spring 2019″.  This dynamic handcrafted product showcase, which will feature a juried selection of the NYHC’s local talent, will take place on Sunday, May 12, from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, at the popular shopping destination located at 100 West 77 Street and Columbus Avenue.

“Grand Bazaar NYC firmly believes in supporting local artists, designers and craft-makers, which helps keep our city vibrant and creative,” said Marc Seago, Executive Director at Grand Bazaar NYC. “We’re thrilled that the NY Handmade Collective will once again be joining us for this exciting Spring shopping experience.”

Shoppers are sure to find a diverse selection of outstanding, one-of-a-kind, exclusively handcrafted merchandise from over 40 talented, multi-disciplined artisans and designers from the New York metropolitan area.  The vast array of exceptional goods will run the gamut from fine art, stationery, unusual jewelry, distinctive fashions, home decor and amazing skincare products to items for children and pets.

“This year’s new and improved market is a rare opportunity to go behind-the-scenes, interact with and shop directly from our cadre of diverse, talented local artisans who’ll be offering special discounts and customization options on their unique products which aren’t even available online,” said Andi B. O’Connor, co-organizer.  “Situated within the long-established Upper West Side market that is the Grand Bazaar NYC, the NYHC Show will highlight the value of quality handmade crafts in today’s society when so much is mass-produced and disposable.”

The Importance of Handmade

Last year NYHC surveyed over 200 artisans to gather impressions and data on the importance of quality handmade products. At this year’s show, NYHC will have a table with information and materials on this subject, staffed by members who can answer visitors’ questions.  For example, creators of handcrafted goods are part of a community dedicated to connecting with customers and bringing back the personal touch that is so rare in today’s digital global marketplace.

Other survey findings:  Handmade products tend to be of higher quality, singular and authentic, that reflect rich cultures and traditions and an eco-friendly, sustainable, environmental awareness that is present in these artisans’ practices and processes.  Handcrafted items also nurture creativity and individuality and perpetuate the art of crafting.  In addition, handmade products are beautiful, one-of-a-kind and well-made.  As a result, they tend to be more valuable and durable than mass-produced, disposable items.

About NYHC:

Founded in 2007 and representing one of the oldest, largest and most professionally organized teams of local active sellers on Etsy, Inc., the NYHC has cultivated a long-established, local presence in the NYC metro area by hosting a number of successful and highly curated in-person markets, workshops and events:  Holiday Handmade Cavalcade, Crafts in Chelsea, and Celebrate Brooklyn, to name a few. NYHC is also known for its all-volunteer organization dedicated to the promotion and marketing of online selling opportunities on behalf of its members through its wide-ranging press outreach, expansive social media presence, informative blogs and beautiful website.

About Grand Bazaar NYC:

Open year-round and located at 100 West 77th St and Columbus Avenue, Grand Bazaar NYC is one of the oldest and largest weekly curated markets in this city with over 43,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. It is the only market with a social mission for the exclusive purpose of raising much-needed funding for the four neighboring public schools, benefiting over 4,000 children.
