Oratorio Society Of New York Performing Handel’s Messiah

Monday, December 17, 2018, At 8:00 pm

at Carnegie Hall: A New York Tradition Of The Highest Order

OSNY’s 145th Annual Performance Of This Holiday Favorite

Kent Tritle conducts; Leslie Fagan, Daniel Moody, Isaiah Bell, and Joseph Beutel are soloists

The Oratorio Society of New York has the distinction of having performed Handel’sMessiah every Christmas season since 1874, and at Carnegie Hall every year the hall has been open since 1891 – qualifying the OSNY’s annual rendition of the holiday classic as a New York tradition of the highest order.

On Monday, December 17, 2018, at 8:00 pm, Music Director Kent Tritle leads the OSNY in its 145th performance of Messiah, the second event of its annual Carnegie Hall season.

The 200-voice Oratorio Society, New York’s champion of the grand choral tradition, offers New Yorkers Messiah on an impressive scale. Commenting on a recent performance, Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim said in The New York Times, “when the entire chorus belted out the word ‘wonderful’ in ‘For unto us a child is born,’ the effect was exactly that.”

Leslie Fagan, a beloved Oratorio Society guest artist, will be the soprano soloist. The other three soloists – countertenor Daniel Moody, tenor Isaiah Bell, and baritoneJoseph Beutel – were all finalists in the Society’s Lyndon Woodside Oratorio-Solo Competition; they are now performing with the Society for the first time, and Mr. Moody is making his Carnegie Hall debut.

OSNY Carnegie Hall Season Continues with Sibelius’s Kullervo and Verdi’s Requiem

For the third concert of its Carnegie Hall series, on February 25, 2019, the Society departs from its traditional concert format with a full evening of music for divided choruses. First, the women’s chorus takes center stage to present Berlioz’ Tristia:“La mort d’Ophelie” and “Sirènes,” from Debussy’s Nocturnes. After the intermission the men’s chorus joins soloists soprano Johanna Rusanen, in her New York debut, and baritone Takaoki Onishi for one of Sibelius’s greatest symphonic choral works, Kullervo. This performance of Kullervo, the first in the OSNY’s history, is made possible by the Jane and Aatos Errko Foundation.

The Oratorio Society will end its 2018-19 season on May 9, 2019, with Verdi’s thrillingly dramatic Messa da Requiem, with soprano Elizabeth de Trejo, mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, tenor Joshua Blue, and bass Adam Lau.

Lyndon Woodside OratorioSolo Competition Finals Concert—April 6, 2019

On April 6, the Oratorio Society will hold the finals of its annual Lyndon Woodside Oratorio-Solo Competition, which remains the only major competition to focus exclusively on oratorio singing, in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Each of the eight finalists will perform two works in concert before a panel of distinguished judges, and prizes are announced immediately after the judges’ deliberations.

Leslie Fagan, soprano, has performed under the batons of such noted conductors as Sir David Willcocks, Hans Graf, Jukka Pekka Saraste, Kent Tritle, Heinz Ferlisch, Victor Borge, and Elmer Isler.  She is a regular guest artist with the OSNY; her 2011 performance in Poulenc’s Gloria was heralded as “one of the most memorable performances of the season” by Opera News. She has recently released the first disc in a project to promote Canadian art song: Thread of Winter.www.canadianartsong.com  www.lesliefagan.com

Daniel Moody, countertenor, has garnered widespread acclaim for his commanding yet expressive vocal timbre. Praised as having a “vocal resonance, [which] makes a profoundly startling impression” (The New York Times), Mr. Moody has recently performed with Les Violons du Roy, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and Cincinnati Opera; in the title roles in Handel’s Giulio Cesare and Rinaldo, and roles in Mark Morris’s productions of Britten’s Curlew River and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at BAM. www.danielmoodycountertenor.com

Isaiah Bell, tenor, who has been praised for his “beautiful tenor, command of style, and natural stage presence,” in October of this year created the role of Antinous, the tragic lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian, in the world premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s Hadrian at the Canadian Opera Company, appearing alongside Thomas Hampson as Hadrian and Karita Mattila as Plotina. Recent engagements include George Benjamin’s Written on Skin with the Toronto Symphony conducted by the composer, and Mark Morris’s double-bill production of Curlew River andDido and Aeneas at BAM. www.isaiahbell.com

Joseph Beutel, bass-baritone, who has been praised as “an imposing bass-baritone” by Opera News, has performed with such companies as Santa Fe Opera, Minnesota Opera, Seattle Opera, and the New York Philharmonic, to name a few. Recent engagements have included Hotel Manager/Duke/Judge in Adès’s Powder Her Facewith Skylight Music Theatre; roles in Martinů’s Comedy on the Bridge and Alexandre bis with Gotham Chamber Opera; and Sulpice in Donizetti’s La fille du régiment with Fargo-Moorhead Opera. www.josephbeutel.com

OSNY Music Director since the 2005-06 season, Kent Tritle is also Music Director of the professional chorus Musica Sacra, and Director of Cathedral Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine where he directs the concert series Great Music in a Great Space. Mr. Tritle is Director of Choral Activities at the Manhattan School of Music and a member of the graduate faculty of the Juilliard School. An acclaimed organ virtuoso, he is the organist of the New York Philharmonic and the American Symphony Orchestra. www.kenttritle.com

Since its founding in 1873, the Oratorio Society of New York, New York’s 200-voice avocational chorus, has become the city’s standard for grand choral performance, having performed world, U.S., and New York premieres of works as diverse as Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem (1877), Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette (1882), a full-concert production of Wagner’s Parsifal at the Metropolitan Opera House (1886), Britten’s The World of the Spirit (1998), Filas’s Song of Solomon (2012), Moravec’sBlizzard Voices (2013), and, in 2018, the Paul Moravec/Mark Campbell oratorioSanctuary Road, and Behzad Ranjbaran’s We Are One in their world premiere performances. On its 100th anniversary the Oratorio Society received the Handel Medallion, New York City’s highest cultural award, in recognition of its contributions. www.oratoriosocietyofny.org

Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street, NYC.

The 10-piece Paul Winter Consort will be joined by powerhouse gospel singer Theresa Thomason, the 25 dancers and drummers of the Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, and special guests.

Paul Winter’s Winter Solstice Celebration has become New York’s favorite holiday alternative to The Nutcracker and Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular. A dazzling extravaganza of music, dance, and spectacle within the awesome space and acoustics of the world’s largest cathedral, the event is a contemporary take on ancient solstice rituals, when people felt a calling to come together on the longest night of the year to welcome the return of the sun and the birth of the new year.

The Paul Winter Consort includes: Paul Winter on soprano sax; Paul McCandless, English horn and bass clarinet; Eugene Friesen, cello; Jeff Holmes, keyboard; Eliot Wadopian, bass; Jamey Haddad, percussion; and Tim Brumfield on the Cathedral’s great Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ.

The Winter Solstice Celebration has evolved over the years to inhabit the entirety of the titanic space of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The resounding acoustics have inspired the music of the event, and the vast dimensions of the Cathedral have given birth to unique theatrical elements. A 28-foot spiral “Solstice Tree,” adorned with a multitude of bells, gongs, and chimes symbolizing the diversity of the life family, becomes a part of the music; a huge Earth-globe travels through the Nave and rises over the center-stage; and a giant sun-gong ascends, with its player, to the 100-foot vault of the Cathedral at the symbolic moment of the return of the sun.

“Of all the places I’ve played in the world,” Paul Winter says, “only two could host an event on this scale: the Cathedral and the Grand Canyon.”

Tickets are now on sale at solsticeconcert.com/wintersolstice.

Kinding Sindaw

The cultures, traditions and existence of the indigenous peoples of the Philippines are threatened by corporate development. Because they have been subjected to systematic discrimination and political disenfranchisement, their cultures have been viewed as inferior, primitive, irrelevant, or something to be eradicated and transformed. Through art, theater, and cultural workshops and classes, Kinding Sindaw seeks to assert, reclaim, recreate, and preserve indigenous Philippine culture and traditions, and shows workshop participants its richness, vibrancy and significance to current and future generations.

Through the use of movements and musical training taught by Potri Ranka Manis and other tradition-bearers, interspersed with lectures about the historical significance of the music and movements, as well as integrated theater arts workshops, participants internalizes the indigenous experience. These workshops are targeted to a broad audience, who wants to develop both artistic skill, and take advantage of educational opportunities of learning an ancient culture. These workshops also develop artists as advocates and leaders in their communities.

Instructors include Potri Ranka Manis, Diane Camino, Rose Yapching, Amira Roca, Guro Frank Ortega, and Nonilon Queano. Potri Ranka Manis, founder and artistic director, have extensively learned directly from indigenous communities, and is from the Maranao tribe, herself. Rose Yapching, Diance Camino, and Amira Roca are all Dance Captains, with extensive training and experience. Nonilon Queano is a master musician, in both drums and kulintang. The 2019 Gay Pride / LBGT March & Map

Sunday, June 30, 2019

Look below on this page for a map of the march route

This year’s march will step off from 26th Street and 5th Avenue and march down 5th and turn west at 8th Street (just a couple blocks shy of towards Washington Square Park) and then go up Greenwich Avenue for a very short block from which it’ll turn onto Christopher Street. At the intersection of 7th Avenue, Christopher Street and West 4th Street the march would then turn northward along 7th Avenue to end at 23rd Street and 7th.

New Yorkled’s covered this event numerous times over the past years and the amount of energy to be found from within the crowds as well as the march itself is phenomenal! Unequaled in comparison to so many other similar events which take place in our great city of New York.

There’s also the many photos New Yorkled has taken at the pride march in past years:

Official Press Release concerning the Announced Grand Marshals for the 2019 Pride March:

The 2019 LGBTQIA+ Pride March announces Grand Marshals

Cast of POSE, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Gay Liberation Front, The Trevor Project, Monica Helms to lead

NEW YORK, NY, April 11, 2019 – NYC Pride, the official host of WorldPride 2019 | Stonewall 50, announces its five Grand Marshals slated to lead both the 50th NYC Pride March on Sunday, June 30 2019, and this year’s commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. The cast of POSE, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Gay Liberation Front, The Trevor Project and Monica Helms will head this year’s celebration.

POSE is a dance musical, set in the 1980s, that explores the juxtaposition of life and society in New York: the ball culture world, the rise of the Trump era, and the downtown social and literary scene. Cast members Dominique Jackson (Elektra), Indya Moore (Angel), and MJ Rodriguez (Blanca) will represent the show.

Phyll Opoku-Gyimah is the nucleus of the award-winning celebration and protest that is UK Black Pride. Widely known as Lady Phyll – partly due to her decision to reject an MBE in the New Year’s Honours’ list, to protest Britain’s role in formulating anti-LGBTQ+ penal codes across its empire – she is a senior official at the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) trade union as the Head of Equality and Learning. She’s a community builder and organizer; a Kaleidoscope Trust Trustee; an Albert Kennedy Trust patron; Diva Magazine columnist, and public speaker focusing on race, gender, sexuality and class.

Gay Liberation Front was the very first LGBTQ activist organization formed after the Stonewall Rebellion. The courageous members of GLF fought to give political shape and direction to a whole new generation of LGBTQ militancy that spread with unprecedented vigor and impact across the nation and the world.

The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people. The organization works to save young lives by providing support through free and confidential programs, including TrevorLifeline, TrevorText, and TrevorChat. They also run TrevorSpace, the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth, and operate innovative education, research, and advocacy programs.

Monica Helms is a transgender activist, author, and veteran of the United States Navy, having served on two submarines. She is also the creator of the Transgender Pride Flag, in 1999, and subsequently donated the original flag to the Smithsonian Institution in 2014.

“In a world where LGBTQIA+ people continue to experience profound oppression, the NYC Pride March is a beacon of hope and community,” said Julian Sanjivan, NYC Pride March Director. “This June 30th, that beacon will shine the brightest it ever has when POSE, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Gay Liberation Front, The Trevor Project and Monica Helms lead 115,000 marchers in the largest display of LGBTQIA+ pride the world has ever seen.”

“As millions of LGBTQIA+ folks from across the world make their pilgrimage to WorldPride 2019 and the commemoration of Stonewall 50, New York City will display its Pride like never before,” said Chris Frederick, Executive Director of NYC Pride. “The entire month of June, and this day in particular will be a celebration of everything the LGBTQIA+ community stands for.”

The 50th NYC Pride March will commence at noon, on June 30th, from 26th Street and 5th Avenue. Some 115,000 marchers will proceed south on 5th Avenue before heading west on 8th Street. After crossing over 6th Avenue, the March will continue on Christopher Street, passing the site designated, in 2016 by President Barack Obama, as the Stonewall National Monument. It will then turn north on 7th Avenue, passing the New York City AIDS Memorial, before dispersing in Chelsea just north of 23rd Street and 7th Avenue.

Seventy-four percent of all marching groups are non-profit organizations, and more than half of all marching groups are participating free-of-charge. Upwards of 150 marching groups are coming from outside of the US to participate in this historic event.

WorldPride 2019 | Stonewall 50 will be comprised of more than 25 different events for LGBTQIA+ and allied people during the full month of June, 2019. Throughout the course of the celebration, all WorldPride events will ladder up to the foundational theme, “Millions of Moments of Pride.” Join New York City, and the world, this June as we honor the past, celebrate our differences and march together for our future. Keep in mind that yours truly, New Yorkled, has been to this festival twice long ago. Gotta mention how crowded it was. I mean, wall to wall or rather building to building people. Took maybe fifteen minutes to get from one corner to another. BUT, what a blast it was! I totally enjoyed the energy! You just might as well.
