City Parks Foundation – Track & Field Programs

April 7 – June 23, 2019

This April, City Parks Foundation is kicking off its 2019 Spring sports programs for young people living in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, or Manhattan. CityParks Track & Field, presented in partnership with New York Road Runners and supported by the Randall’s Island Park Alliance, gives New York City kids, ages eight to 14, the chance to learn the basics of the sport. From hurdles and relay races, to long jump, shot put and javelin throw, this program runs from April 20 through June 8 in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, with sessions once per week. The Jesse Owens Track and Field program introduces novice runners to cross country distance running through runs from East Harlem to Randall’s Island Park. This program runs from April 7 – June 23 in Manhattan, and is held once per week. Online registration is now open for all spring programs at CityParksFoundation.org/play. Participants are encouraged to register online in advance, though walk-up participants may register on-site if space permits. For more information and a full list of City Parks Foundation’s 2019 sports programs, please visit www.CityParksFoundation.org. The shows reflects the neighborhood’s heritage and New York City’s incredible diversity. The free Memorial Day Concert at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine features Bruckner’s Eighth. “Beauty is what Bruckner is talking about,” says Jaap van Zweden. In this symphony beauty takes many forms: its gradual unfolding, burnished brass sonorities, soaring lyricism, and a triumphant ending. An inspiring, spiritual way to remember those who died while serving in America’s armed forces.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the performance; ticket distribution will begin at 5:00 PM. The audio of the performance will be broadcast onto the adjacent Pulpit Green, weather permitting.

Green-Wood’s Death Café continues in spring and summer. In a small group, participants will share their thoughts on death and dying in a supportive environment where they can feel comfortable talking about these universal, but rarely discussed, topics.

The Death Café is inspired by centuries-old European salons where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical, political, or scientific ideas. The first Death Café was started by British entrepreneur Jon Underwood in 2010 as a way to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” To date, over 5,000 of these meetings have taken place in countries around the world.

Green-Wood’s death educator Amy Cunningham, an independent funeral director, leads the Death Café. Light refreshments will be served.

Governors Island to Stay Open Late on Fridays and Saturdays in 2019

Governors Island Late Fridays and Saturdays

OH YES!

Fridays and Saturdays
May 24 – August 31, 2019
Open until 10:00 pm

We got the chance to experience late days at the Island last year and so enamored was I with the whole thing that I went two days in a row. Luckily they were absolutely stunning days! You wouldn’t believe how excited I just got when I discovered that, yep, they’re offering this up so early in the season. Had imagined them not doing this until a bit later but we’ll take it!

The Ferry leaves from the historic Battery Maritime Building, located at 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan just north of the Staten Island Ferry. It’s a short and cheap ride across the waters.

If you’re a photographer like yours truly then you’ll really get a kick out of the chance to capture the setting sun as well as the Lower Manhattan skyline during the blue hour and evening. Yes, of course, you can do so on other days when the island’s open to all, but come on! This is a great chance to capture it all under a night sky. I plan to return again, and again and again and again. Will you?

Visit this page at the official site for Ferry information.

The photo at the top of this page was taken at the end of the sunset hour as the night sky crept in. We took many photos like this during our visit.

Below, would be yet another panoramic shot taken there as well as a photo taken in the afternoon.

Listings come courtesy of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Please be sure to check back at their site for updates, changes and possible cancellations. We’re listing only what’s available thus far at this point near the tail end of May, but we’ll be updating this page on an almost weekly basis until we’re sure that the listings are finalized which may not come until we’re past the mid-summer season point in August.

CELEBRATE ISRAEL PARADE 2019
Jun 2 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

CELEBRATE ISRAEL PARADE 2019

Sunday, June 2, 2019
11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Parade to be held on Fifth Avenue from 57th to 74th Streets

The 2019 Celebrate Israel Parade, one of the largest events in New York City, is back for the 55th year on Sunday, June 2, from 11 AM to 4 PM, marching up Fifth Avenue from 57th to 74th Streets, Manhattan.

Fifth Avenue will once again turn blue and white as more than 30 floats, musical performers, 15 world-class marching bands, and 40,000 marchers entertain hundreds of thousands of spectators for the largest celebration of Israel in the world.

This year’s Parade will welcome Edward A. Mermelstein, Founder and CEO of One & Only Realty and President of ZAKA, as the Grand Marshall.

The 2019 creative theme for marching groups and floats is “Only in Israel,” after the famed Hebrew song Rak B’Yisrael. Each group or float will include colorful banners, costumes, and props related to the theme in some way in a show of unity and pageantry for Israel.

The Parade will take place rain or shine. For the latest information on the Celebrate Israel Parade, please visit the Parade website at www.celebrateisraelny.org or follow us on [email protected] or visit our Facebook page: Celebrate Israel Parade.
