Todd Crow is a pianist whose artistry has brought him critical superlatives in the U.S. and notably in England – there largely through regular appearances on the BBC. The New York Times has described his playing as “heroic, [showing] endless flair, color and stamina.” The Times of London has praised his performances as “spine-chilling” and “exhilarating,” and The Wall Street Journal said that his playing exhibited “stunning control and a wonderful sense of musical architecture.”

Todd was a member of the Vassar College faculty for 49 years, retiring in June 2018 as the George Sherman Dickinson Professor of Music. The Vassar College Department of Music is presenting Todd Crow in recital at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, March 23, 2019, at 7:30 pm. His program is a hearty meal of virtuoso pianism: Mendelssohn’s Fantasy in F-sharp minor, Op. 28; Schumann’sKreisleriana, Op. 16; Debussy’s Etude No. 10 “pour les Sonorités opposées”; Three Préludes by Henri Dutilleux; and Bartók’s Dance Suite.

Thomas Sauer, a colleague of Todd Crow’s at Vassar, had this to say: “It was my good fortune to have served on the Vassar piano faculty with Todd Crow for 19 years. He was the kindest, most selfless and generously supportive colleague imaginable, and his personal pianistic standards would be the envy of a performer at any stage of a performing career.”

“Many of his colleagues consider him to be a pianist’s pianist,” wrote the critic Jed Distler on ClassicsToday about Chopin: The Late Mazurkas (MSR, 2018), Crow’s latest in a series of distinguished recordings that have earned him a string of critical acclaim over the years. Two discs in particular of performances recorded for BBC broadcast – Todd Crow: The BBC Recordings, Volume 1 (2010), music of Mendelssohn, Mendelssohn/Liszt, Moscheles, and Schumann; and Volume 2 (2013), piano variations of Brahms and Dvorák – elicited from Fanfare magazine what is perhaps definitive praise for this pianist, calling him “…among the aristocrats of keyboard artists,” and saying this: “Todd Crow is an American treasure. He combines a solid technique and beautiful keyboard touch with complete mastery of the music.”

In recent years he has appeared as soloist with orchestras in the United States, England, Italy, Israel, the Czech Republic, and elsewhere, and in recital or chamber music at the Berlioz/Dutilleux Festival in Manchester, England, Washington’s National Gallery of Art, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. He has performed frequently with such groups as the Brentano, Borromeo, Composers, Concord, Shanghai, Miami, Daedalus, Jupiter, Miró, Parker, Dover and Escher string quartets, the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, and with many eminent soloists including famed jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman.  He made his Carnegie Hall debut as soloist with the American Symphony in 1992 and his London orchestral debut at the Barbican Centre with the London Philharmonic in 1986.  He has been heard on BBC Radio for many years in both live and recorded performances, and on National Public Radio in the USA, as well as many other American radio stations.

Since 1996, he has been music director and pianist of the Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber Music in Northeast Harbor, Maine, now looking forward to its 55th season. In addition to frequent appearances at the Bard Music Festival, he has been heard at the Casals Festival, Music Mountain, Maverick Concerts, and other festivals. His CDs include sonatas of Haydn and Schubert, Liszt’s transcription for piano solo of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, works of Sergei Taneyev and Dohnányi, the complete works for cello and piano by Mendelssohn (with cellist Mark Shuman), and Ernst Toch’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the NDR-Hamburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leon Botstein. Released in 2016, a CD entitled Of Love of You–A Tribute to Emery W. Harper features world premiere recordings of new American works for piano, soprano, and bass-baritone by Bolcom, Liebermann, Rands, Stucky, Del Tredici, Wyner, and others. Todd Crow can also be heard on the Albany, ASV, Bridge, First Impression, Golden String, New World, and Toccata Classics labels.

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Todd Crow is an honors graduate of the University of California and The Juilliard School. Among his teachers have been Erno Dániel, Ania Dorfmann, and at the Music Academy of the West, Emanuel Bay. At the age of 13 he was awarded an indefinitely renewable scholarship for the study of music composition by the Epstein Foundation of Chicago, and as a teenager he won prizes for his works including a competition sponsored by the National Society of Arts and Letters.  At age fifteen, he won the Santa Barbara Symphony Young Artists Competition.  He is also editor of the volume Bartók Studies (Detroit, 1976).  In 1986 he received the University of California’s Distinguished Alumni Award. www.toddcrowpiano.com

Governors Island Late Fridays and Saturdays

OH YES!

Fridays and Saturdays
May 24 – August 31, 2019
Open until 10:00 pm

We got the chance to experience late days at the Island last year and so enamored was I with the whole thing that I went two days in a row. Luckily they were absolutely stunning days! You wouldn’t believe how excited I just got when I discovered that, yep, they’re offering this up so early in the season. Had imagined them not doing this until a bit later but we’ll take it!

The Ferry leaves from the historic Battery Maritime Building, located at 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan just north of the Staten Island Ferry. It’s a short and cheap ride across the waters.

If you’re a photographer like yours truly then you’ll really get a kick out of the chance to capture the setting sun as well as the Lower Manhattan skyline during the blue hour and evening. Yes, of course, you can do so on other days when the island’s open to all, but come on! This is a great chance to capture it all under a night sky. I plan to return again, and again and again and again. Will you?

Visit this page at the official site for Ferry information.

The photo at the top of this page was taken at the end of the sunset hour as the night sky crept in. We took many photos like this during our visit.

Below, would be yet another panoramic shot taken there as well as a photo taken in the afternoon.

LA India, Jose Feliciano, Chi Chi Rodríguez, Edgar Martínez, Alberto Carrión, Dagmar Rivera And Ana María Martínez Among Those To Be Honored At The 62nd Annual National Puerto Rican Day Parade

April 30, 2019, San Juan, PR  – At a press conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade (NPRDP) Board of Directors made additional announcements regarding its plans for the 62nd Annual celebration, including key themes, tributes and an initial list of honorees.  Under the theme, “One People, Many Voices,” the Parade will continue celebrating the best of Puerto Rican art, culture and history, while also highlighting special causes and initiatives to foster economic development and help rebuild Puerto Rico in the post-Hurricane Maria era.

As part of this year’s celebration, the NPRDP will honor two legendary singer/songwriters who have celebrated and helped shape the repertoire of Puerto Rican music for decades. As part of this year’s celebration, the NPRDP will honor the internationally acclaimed 7-time GRAMMY award winner, José Feliciano with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Feliciano’s music has impacted global culture, with songs like “Feliz Navidad” becoming ranked among the top American holiday classics.  Also honored for Lifetime Achievement is Alberto Carrión, composer of “Amanecer Borincano,” considered by many as a second national hymn in Puerto Rico. This past September 20, Mr. Carrión led the chorus of the University of Puerto Rico in Cayey, performing this iconic song to memorialize the one-year anniversary of Hurricane María’s landfall in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. Also honored for Lifetime Achievement is Puerto Rico’s “television sweetheart”, Dagmar Rivera, whose distinguished career has spanned four decades and impacted pop culture and entertainment on the Island. Recently, Telemundo dedicated their 65th Anniversary Celebration to Ms. Rivera, in recognition of her prolific and successful career.

The 2019 NPRDP Madrina (Godmother) title goes to Latin GRAMMY Award winning artist, La India.  Born in Rio Piedras, PR, and known as “La Princesa de la Salsa,” La India is credited with top dance hits that span musical genres including Freestyle, Hip-Hop and Reggaetón.  She is best known for her Salsa classics, including Billboard hit “Dicen que soy” and “Vivir lo nuestro,” a duet sung with Marc Anthony. Her contributions to Puerto Rican and Latin music continue to this day, starring in the international tour of the theatrical production, Forever Tango, in 2019.

Joining this year’s honorees is former Major League Baseball legend and newly elected National Baseball Hall of Fame 2019 member, Edgar Martínez,  the 2019 NPRDP All-Star Athlete. Edgar had an impressive career that spanned 18 years with the Seattle Mariners. He is recognized as one of only nine players in Major League history to record at least 300 home runs, 500 double and 1,000 walks while posting a career batting average over .300 and a career on-base percentage over .400.

Taking on the Issue of Human Trafficking

Each year, the Parade Board of Directors selects a cause or issue of importance to the Puerto Rican community to help create awareness and identify solutions.  This year, the NPRDP will raise awareness on the issue of human trafficking by honoring the Ricky Martin Foundation for its work to denounce human trafficking and for its research and community initiatives to educate about its existence.

Human trafficking is one of the most lucrative crimes in the world, impacting an estimated 49.8 million people around the world.  Through its research, the Ricky Martin Foundation is working to shine a spotlight on the existence of this crime and its impact on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

A Tribute to Pablo Casals and Puerto Rico’s Legacy in Classical Music

One of the key tributes celebrated by the NPRDP in 2019 will be celebrating the life’s work of the legendary cellist, composer and conductor, Pablo Casals. Born in Catalonia, Spain of a Puerto Rican mother, Casals was known as one of the greatest cellists of his time. He relocated to Puerto Rico, where he established the Casals Festival, in 1955, which continues to be one of the world’s pre-eminent classical music festivals to this day.  He later founded the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, in 1958 and 1959, respectively. Casals was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by John F. Kennedy, in 1963. The Puerto Rico Symphony and Conservatory of Music are celebrating 60 years of continuing Pablo Casal’s legacy by celebrating Puerto Rico’s contribution to classical music and the performing arts, and each institution is being honored in the 2019 Parade.

Also present were the Maestro Maximiano Valdés, Musical Director for the Puerto Rico Symphony, Islaím Rodríguez, Assistant Director for the Corporation for Musical Arts and Jessabet Vivas Capó, Director for Cultural Promotion.  In a note received from Carlos Ruiz, he expressed, “For the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña and La Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico, it is an honor to participate for the first time in direct collaboration with the renowned organization of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade  Mr. Carlos R. Ruiz, Executive Director of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, La Corporación de las Artes Musicales and La Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico. Our Puerto Rican sentiment transcends geographic boundaries, and it is our goal to create strong ties of fraternity and collaboration with our fellow Puerto Ricans residing in the United States. Regardless of where we find ourselves, Puerto Rico will always be felt as one heart.”

As part of the tribute to Puerto Rico’s contributions to the Classical Music and Performing Arts, the NPRDP will honor world-renowned, GRAMMY award-winning soprano and opera singer, Ana María Martínez as Orgullo Puertorriqueño. Born in San Juan and considered to be one of today’s foremost sopranos, Martínez graduated from the Juilliard School of Music and went on to perform with the world’s most elite opera companies, including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera and Lyric Opera Chicago. She regularly performs with the Houston Grand Opera, where she is currently serving as Artistic Advisor. Even with her global fame, Ms. Martínez performs regularly in Puerto Rico, with appearances at the Casals Festival and engagements with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra; including  a standing ovation at their 60th Anniversary Gala Concert, in November 2018.

Honoring Educators and Librarians

The NPRDP is committed to promoting the pursuit of education through its scholarship program, as well as by recognizing individuals and organizations that have positively impacted the Puerto Rican community in this regard. In 2019, the NPRDP will pay tribute to the posthumous honoree, Pura Belpré, the first Puerto Rican librarian in the New York Library system. Born in Cidra, Puerto Rico, Pura Belpré was an advocate for the Puerto Rican community of Spanish Harlem.  She instituted a bilingual storytelling program for the youth of El Barrio, to continue connecting them with their heritage while improving their English skills. Her groundbreaking work transformed the 115th Street Branch into a cultural center for New York’s Latino Community.

In 2019, the NPRDP is also recognizing the Flamboyán Foundation, whose mission is to implement sustainable solutions so children most impacted by inequity are able to thrive. Founded by Kristin Ehrgood and Vadim Nikitine, and guided by the belief that all children deserve the opportunity to live a fulfilling life, the Flamboyán Foundation works to ensure students most impacted by inequity are prepared to succeed in school and beyond.

The NPRDP honors educators, administrators, academics and other leaders whose life’s work has been dedicated to promoting the education of Puerto Rican and Latino students at the Education Leadership Awards. One of this year’s Education Leadership Honorees is Ana María García Blanco, PhD, Founder & Executive Director at Instituto Nueva Escuela.  Ms. García Blanco’s award-winning work is recognized for having transformed the development of the Montessori Method in Puerto Rico. Also recognized as an Education Leadership Honoree is Jeannette Valdés Morales, an educator with expertise in Special Education and coach on Puerto Rico’s Special Olympics team.

For a third consecutive year, the Parade will award 100 scholarships to exceptional high school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores and juniors of Puerto Rican descent. Each scholarship is in the amount of $2,000 for a total pool of $200,000, a 20-fold increase since 2013.  This year’s applicants represent over 20 states and Puerto Rico.  Scholarship recipients will be announced at the Education Leadership Awards on May 25, in New York City.

Promoting Economic Development

In 2018, the NPRDP paid tribute to several organizations that were helping with the recovery from Hurricane Maria.  The Parade continues that work this year by also recognizing organizations whose work promotes economic development on the Island. As part of this initiative, NPRDP recognizes  Discover Puerto Rico, a newly established private, not for-profit Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) whose mission is to make Puerto Rico visible to the world as a premier travel destination. With the aim of bringing prosperity to the people of Puerto Rico, Discover Puerto Rico promotes the Island’s diversity and uniqueness for leisure and business travel, as well as events. Discover Puerto Rico will have a key role at the NPRDP Gala Fundraiser and at the June 9 Parade on Fifth Avenue.

A Special Recognition for Sports Legends and Rising Stars

The 2019 Parade celebration will honor Puerto Rican athletes that have left their mark on sports history, including legends and rising stars. The NPRDP will honor the legendary 1979 Puerto Rican National Basketball Team that competed against the United States team for the gold medal at the thirteenth Pan-American Games, that year. 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of this historic match-up, and to celebrate this milestone the NPRDP recognizes the film, Nuyorican Básquet, a documentary that tells the dramatic story of this historic moment. Puerto Rico’s 1979 National Basketball Team was comprised of players that were mainly born and/or raised in New York, the film showcases the contributions of Puerto Ricans from the diaspora and the achievements that can be realized when our collective community unites as one.

The NPRDP will also honor the 61 athletes that comprised Team Puerto Rico at the 2019 Special Olympics, held earlier this year in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. These impressive athletes competed across 10 sports earning 55 medals for Puerto Rico, including 16 gold, 17 silver and 22 bronze medals. Team Puerto Rico is an excellent example of Puerto Rican resilience and pursuit of excellence as the Island recovered from the devastating effects of Hurricane María.

NEW YORK, NY – On Sunday, May 26, 2019, the largest Latinx celebration in Lower Manhattan returns for a 32nd year. Strong Roots, Healthy Branches: Harvesting Connections, the Festival theme, pays tribute to the Loisaida Inc.’s Puerto Rican roots and longstanding commitment to the Lower East Side.

As always, the festivities commence at 11 a.m. with a Community Parade featuring the work of Garbagia , an eco-urban recycled arts initiative that will work throughout the month at the Loisaida Center with local artists and residents to conduct art building workshops to create instruments, flower masks, ‘vejigantes,’ paper mache animal masks, and other props—with an emphasis on recycled and found materials.

On the Festival Main Stage, host Awilda Rodriguez Lora will introduce an eclectic mix of Latinx musical acts, including the Lower East Side’s very own, Son del Monte , led by renowned timablero Manuel Rivera , who will be performing their take on the Cuban charanga. The lineup also includes Puerto Rican pleneros La Maquina Insular , whose lineup features Hector “Tito” Matos and other members of Viento de Agua , a group known for revitalizing the Puerto Rican musical traditions of bomba y plena. Making their Festival debut will be Nuyorican experimental salsa orchestra, Abrazos Army . Rounding out the main stage lineup will be Afro-Cuban dancer Yesenia Selier and Puerto Rican theatre troupe, Y No Había Luz.

Y No Había Luz will also perform as part of the 6th Annual Festival Theater Lab . The family-friendly event will move to the street-level this year as part of the festival’s street vendor fair along Avenue C or what is known as the Loisaida Commercial Corridor (E. 6th Street to E. 12th Street.). After the successful debut of their post-Hurricane play ¡Ay Maria! at last year’s Festival, Puerto Rican/Latin American theatre collective Mezcolanza will again host a series of one-act performances. Plenatoriom , a Puerto Rican plena initiative housed at Loisaida, and the improv comedy troupe Teatro 220 will also perform, followed by the closing Community Pageant.

The free Memorial Day Concert at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine features Bruckner’s Eighth. “Beauty is what Bruckner is talking about,” says Jaap van Zweden. In this symphony beauty takes many forms: its gradual unfolding, burnished brass sonorities, soaring lyricism, and a triumphant ending. An inspiring, spiritual way to remember those who died while serving in America’s armed forces.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the performance; ticket distribution will begin at 5:00 PM. The audio of the performance will be broadcast onto the adjacent Pulpit Green, weather permitting.

Green-Wood’s Death Café continues in spring and summer. In a small group, participants will share their thoughts on death and dying in a supportive environment where they can feel comfortable talking about these universal, but rarely discussed, topics.

The Death Café is inspired by centuries-old European salons where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical, political, or scientific ideas. The first Death Café was started by British entrepreneur Jon Underwood in 2010 as a way to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” To date, over 5,000 of these meetings have taken place in countries around the world.

Green-Wood’s death educator Amy Cunningham, an independent funeral director, leads the Death Café. Light refreshments will be served.
