NEW YORK (May 8, 2019) – The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will honor the contributions of General Joseph L. Votel, United States Army (Ret.); Frank Bisignano, chairman and CEO of First Data; and NASA trailblazer Margaret Hamilton at the 2019 Salute to Freedom gala on Thursday, May 23, aboard the historic aircraft carrier Intrepid.Salute to Freedom recognizes extraordinary leadership and honors the brave men and women who serve in defense of our nation. Cocktails begin at 6:00 p.m.; the dinner and awards program begins at 7:00 p.m.

General Votel will receive the 2019 Intrepid Freedom Award for his distinguished service promoting and defending the values of freedom and democracy as a four star general of the U.S. Army, and for 40 years of service to our nation. General Votel recently retired after serving as the 13th commander of the United States Central Command, which oversees U.S. military operations in parts of Asia and the Middle East.

Mr. Bisignano will receive the 2019 Intrepid Salute Award in honor of his outstanding business and philanthropic achievements, particularly in recognition of his leadership role with First Data Salutes. Through this company-wide military engagement initiative, First Data Salutes provides the military community with career opportunities, best-in-class education resources, and premier business solutions for veteran-owned businesses. Bisignano supports numerous philanthropic organizations, including the Mount Sinai Health System, The Perelman Center for Performing Arts and PENCIL, an organization that brings together business professionals with students and educators.

As the nation commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Museum will recognize the pioneering achievements of Ms. Hamilton with the Intrepid Lifetime Achievement Award. As a computer scientist at MIT, Hamilton led the team that developed the navigation and guidance software that was instrumental in Apollo 11’s success. She previously was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama for her contributions. Hamilton now serves as the CEO of Hamilton Technologies, Inc., a company she founded.

“We are honored to recognize the accomplishments of three remarkable individuals whose efforts to advance our nation and make positive change in the world have exceeded the call of duty,” said Susan Marenoff-Zausner, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. “General Votel’s tireless record of service and leadership to our country is exemplary. Frank Bisignano’s longstanding dedication to education, as well as serving military families and veterans, has impacted countless lives. Margaret Hamilton’s groundbreaking work has taken humanity beyond what was thought possible, and continues to inspire all who walk through the Museum’s doors. We are thrilled to celebrate them and thank them for all they’ve done.”

The Salute to Freedom gala brings together leading members of the business, education, government, military and scientific communities to help support the Museum’s mission. It provides crucial funding for programs and exhibits that explore the intersection of history, science and service, connect new generations of leaders and innovators to our nation’s history and STEAM principles, and create a supportive space for veterans and service members to find community and readjust to civilian life.

Past honorees at the gala include Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan; heads of state including Margaret Thatcher, Boris Yeltsin and Yitzhak Rabin; Vice President Joe Biden, Senator John McCain and astronaut Scott Kelly.

Students will imagine the challenge of creating technology that operates in the vacuum of space and discuss the engineering behind the space shuttle orbiter Enterprise and its robotic arm. Students will then construct their own “robotic arms” to capture and move objects.

A regularly scheduled short educator talk One Giant Leap: The 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 will run for the length of the Apollo 11: Media, the Moon and Beyond installation.

Intrepid Presents: Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company

Join for an evening of wonder and hilarity with a celebrated New York improv troupe. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced the audacious goal of landing an American on the Moon before the end of the decade. How was this going to be accomplished? We will explore this challenge with the improv group (and guest celeb) as well as former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino and NASA’s Noah Petro, deputy project scientist for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is an after-hours program for adults 21+. Beer and wine will be available for purchase with ID.

Giant Leaps Planetarium Show

A planetarium show that will enable visitors to journey through the small steps that resulted in humanity’s giant leap to the Moon. Audiences will travel alongside astronauts on the Mercury and Gemini missions to discover the techniques and technology that NASA had to invent and perfect before attempting a trip to the Moon. Viewers will then travel 240,000 miles with the Apollo 11 crew and experience the lunar landing from the perspective of Michael Collins, command module pilot, who continued to orbit the Moon as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored its surface. The show will close with a discussion of how the lessons learned from the Space Race will be used to help humans return to the Moon and travel to Mars and beyond.

Children in grades 3–6 will explore the challenge of maintaining physical health in a microgravity environment and discuss astronauts’ nutrition and preparatory physical training. Then, they will learn how the design and protective technology of space suits made it possible for men to walk safely on the Moon.

Students in grades 7–12 will delve deeper into the history of the Space Race and the competition between the United States and the former Soviet Union.

Uncover Intrepid’s role in the early space program with our All Hands program for groups of individuals with disabilities. View the space shuttle Enterprise and explore replica space capsules.

Trolley Tour Uncovers the Fascinating Femme Fatales of Green-Wood

Saturday, July 13, 2019
10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Many distinguished and noteworthy New Yorkers found their permanent residences at Green-Wood. It was, and still is, the place to be buried. Among the 574,000 souls interred here, there are, however, those whose reputations are not as sterling, including Fanny White, famed New York City courtesan and brothel manager; Emma Cunningham, who was tried for the murder of Harvey Burdell amidst rumors of greed, lust, and depravity; and the Dublin-born Kitty Terry, who ran away to Liverpool at fifteen, where two high-end con men courted her and together formed a romantic trio. Expert tour guide Ruth Edebohls will share tales of their alleged misdeeds and unscrupulous behavior.

Green-Wood – 25th Street at 5th Avenue, Brooklyn – Meet at the Gothic Arch.

Take the “R” train to 25th Street in Brooklyn and walk up the hill one block and into the Cemetery.

Free parking is available.

Trolley tour is $25; $20 for members of The Green-Wood Historic Fund and members of the Brooklyn Historical Society.  Reservations are recommended. If the event is not sold out, walk-ups will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. To make an online reservation or to find out more information, visit www.green-wood.com/toursevents or call 718-210-3080.

Space-Focused Programs for Schools and Other Educational Groups:

Bring your school, camp, scout or other 3-12th grade age group for a space-themed education program at the Museum!

Uncover Intrepid’s role in the early space program with our All Hands program for groups of individuals with disabilities. View the space shuttle Enterprise and explore replica space capsules.
