City Parks Foundation – Track & Field Programs

April 7 – June 23, 2019

This April, City Parks Foundation is kicking off its 2019 Spring sports programs for young people living in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, or Manhattan. CityParks Track & Field, presented in partnership with New York Road Runners and supported by the Randall’s Island Park Alliance, gives New York City kids, ages eight to 14, the chance to learn the basics of the sport. From hurdles and relay races, to long jump, shot put and javelin throw, this program runs from April 20 through June 8 in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, with sessions once per week. The Jesse Owens Track and Field program introduces novice runners to cross country distance running through runs from East Harlem to Randall’s Island Park. This program runs from April 7 – June 23 in Manhattan, and is held once per week. Online registration is now open for all spring programs at CityParksFoundation.org/play. Participants are encouraged to register online in advance, though walk-up participants may register on-site if space permits. For more information and a full list of City Parks Foundation’s 2019 sports programs, please visit www.CityParksFoundation.org. Jun 3 – Jun 23 all-day
2019 Sing for Hope Pianos @ New York | United States

2019 Sing for Hope Pianos

June 3 – 23, 2019

The following comes courtesy of the official Sing for Hope website

“”Sing for Hope is bringing the renowned Sing for Hope Pianos back to the streets of New York City this summer. From June 3-23, in celebration of the work Sing for Hope does in communities year-round, we will bring the 2019 Sing for Hope Pianos—50 hubs of community and creativity for all people—to the parks and public spaces of all five boroughs, marking the 500th SFH Piano placed to date. These 50 unique playable masterpieces wouldn’t have been possible without our paint sponsor, Liquitex! Read more here.””

One of the many locations for these pianos would be the Brooklyn Navy Yard for which the folks there were kind enough to share the following information:

“”Come play a melody to support teaching the arts in NYC public schools! Designed by Seth Apter, this beautiful piano will be openly accessibly to all for the coming weeks. Afterward, the piano will be generously donated to a NYC public school. Come see it before its gone!””

Pride 2019: Live 4 Love Art Installation at the World Trade Center’s Oculus
Jun 14 – Jun 28 all-day

The World Trade Center Celebrates
NYC Pride 2019
With Public ‘LIVE 4 LOVE’ Art Installation

On View from June 14 – 28, 2019

Australian artists Maurice Goldberg and Matthew Aberline designed and created an installation that will be displayed in the Oculus from June 14 through June 28 before it joins the NYC Pride March

NEW YORK, June 10, 2019 – The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Silverstein Properties, Westfield World Trade Center and the Alliance for Downtown New York have sponsored a symbolic “Live 4 Love” art installation in the Oculus to celebrate WorldPride NYC and the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.

The large, colorful installation was created by two Australian artists to bring the story of the LGBTQIA+ community to life in a dynamic way.  “Live 4 Love” is an inflatable structure that stands over 20 feet tall and is covered with powerful design symbols that represent freedom, inclusion, gender diversity, friendship, and adversity. In the evenings, the installation will be illuminated with internal LED lights and act as a large-scale lantern.  On June 14, the installation will come to life in the Oculus and will remain on public display until June 28. Segments of the installation will subsequently be showcased during New York City’s Pride March on June 30.

As part of its “Be Seen” campaign, the Downtown Alliance is looking to continue the conversation about LGBTQIA+ visibility with an Instagram video contest that asks people to submit a video to complete the statement #IFeelSeenWhen. The contest is live until June 17 and one lucky winner will get five tickets to walk in the 2019 NYC Pride March on June 30 with NYC & Company.

Every year in June, thousands gather for the NYC Pride March to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community in New York City. The annual march has grown into a civil rights demonstration that honors those who have fought for equal rights and those who have lost their lives to AIDS. You can show your support for the LGBTQIA+ community by sharing your Pride story using the hashtags, #FeelSeenWhen, #WorldPride, and #WorldPride2019.

47 Major Tri-State Area Cultural Institutions To Participate In Annual Instagram Swap

Friday, June 21

On Friday, June 21, forty seven major tri-state area institutions will join forces for the fourth annual #MuseumInstaSwap. Showcasing the breadth and depth of arts and cultural institutions across the city and beyond, this digital initiative encourages participating institutions to draw parallels between each other’s themes and exhibitions.

Each institution will work with its partner to develop posts that resonate with its own collections, exhibitions, and programming, posting with the hashtag #MuseumInstaSwap. First organized in New York City in 2016, #MuseumInstaSwap allows audiences to see the collections of partnered institutions with a vibrant new perspective.

The public is encouraged to follow and interact using #MuseumInstaSwap.

Pop-Up Installation: Earthrise: A 50 Year Contemplation TBC

Meet members of the Space Enabled research group from MIT’s Media Lab and experience Earthrise: A 50 Year Contemplation, their celebration of the original Earthrise photo taken during the Apollo 8 mission in December 1968. Astronauts who have viewed Earth from space report feeling “inspired and changed by its size and fragility.” The Space Enabled research group asks if it is possible to create such a shift in view for Earthlings through an experiential installation.

Saturday, July 20

Intrepid Presents: Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company

Join for an evening of wonder and hilarity with a celebrated New York improv troupe. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced the audacious goal of landing an American on the Moon before the end of the decade. How was this going to be accomplished? We will explore this challenge with the improv group (and guest celeb) as well as former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino and NASA’s Noah Petro, deputy project scientist for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is an after-hours program for adults 21+. Beer and wine will be available for purchase with ID.

Giant Leaps Planetarium Show

A planetarium show that will enable visitors to journey through the small steps that resulted in humanity’s giant leap to the Moon. Audiences will travel alongside astronauts on the Mercury and Gemini missions to discover the techniques and technology that NASA had to invent and perfect before attempting a trip to the Moon. Viewers will then travel 240,000 miles with the Apollo 11 crew and experience the lunar landing from the perspective of Michael Collins, command module pilot, who continued to orbit the Moon as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored its surface. The show will close with a discussion of how the lessons learned from the Space Race will be used to help humans return to the Moon and travel to Mars and beyond.

Early Morning Opening

Come to the Intrepid Museum to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landings with an early morning opening for children with autism and their families. Commemorate this historic event with a tour and hands-on activities.

Space-Focused Programs for Schools and Other Educational Groups:

Bring your school, camp, scout or other 3-12th grade age group for a space-themed education program at the Museum!

Children in grades 3–6 will explore the challenge of maintaining physical health in a microgravity environment and discuss astronauts’ nutrition and preparatory physical training. Then, they will learn how the design and protective technology of space suits made it possible for men to walk safely on the Moon.

Students in grades 7–12 will delve deeper into the history of the Space Race and the competition between the United States and the former Soviet Union. Students will imagine the challenge of creating technology that operates in the vacuum of space and discuss the engineering behind the space shuttle orbiter Enterprise and its robotic arm. Students will then construct their own “robotic arms” to capture and move objects.

A regularly scheduled short educator talk One Giant Leap: The 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 will run for the length of the Apollo 11: Media, the Moon and Beyond installation.

Uncover Intrepid’s role in the early space program with our All Hands program for groups of individuals with disabilities. View the space shuttle Enterprise and explore replica space capsules.

Socrates Sculpture Park Summer Solstice Celebration

Friday, June 21, 2019
6:00 – 10:00 pm

Free to All

Socrate Sculpture Park
32-01 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, NY

The Summer Solstice is the longest and most light-filled day of the year, and one of our favorite occasions to celebrate at Socrates!

In honor of the current exhibition, Chronos Cosmos: Deep Time, Open Space, we’ll be taking our festivities from high-energy daylight to reflective starlit nighttime, exploring the celestial-terrestrial connection and otherworldly origins of expression and art.

The festival features activities for everyone: Agostino Arts face-painting, tarot readings by Liz Nieves, lantern-making with Noguchi Museum, spaceship sculpture building with Free Style Arts Association, light-up inflatables with artist Tamar Ettun, solar observing and telescope tours of the sky with LaGuardia Community College’s Natural Sciences Department.

And as always, get ready to dance! Performance and percussion rock our stage with Secret Society Dance Company, Imamou, and powerhouse ensemble Heritage OP, offering musical textures of Africa and the Caribbean.

Once night begins to fall, we begin a very special version of our annual sunset Solstice ritual featuring ceremony, circle singing, and story sharing with Cetiliztli Nauhcampa Quetzalcoatl in Ixachitlan, Urban Shaman Mama Donna, and Kevin Nathaniel with Harmony Mbira.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2018

Published by Brooklyn Daily Eagle

The 34th Annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island (06.18.2016)

Published by Geometria New York

About The Mermaid Parade:

A completely original creation of Coney Island USA (the not for profit arts organization at 1208 Surf Avenue), the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and one of New York City’s greatest summer events.

A celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside, it showcases over 3,000 creative individuals from all over the five boroughs and beyond, opening the summer with incredible art, entrepreneurial spirit and community pride. The parade highlights Coney Island Pageantry based on a century of many Coney parades, celebrates the artistic vision of the masses, and ensures that the summer season is a success by bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the amusement area in a single day.

The MERMAID PARADE specifically was founded in 1983 with 3 goals: it brings mythology to life for local residents who live on streets named Mermaid and Neptune ; it creates self-esteem in a district that is often disregarded as “entertainment”; and it lets artistic New Yorkers find self-expression in public.

Unlike most parades, this one has no ethnic, religious, or commercial aims. It’s a major New York holiday invented by artists! An American version of the summer-solstice celebration, it takes pride of place with West African Water Festivals and Ancient Greek and Roman street theater. It’s features participants dressed in hand-made costumes based on themes and categories set by us. This creates an artistic framework on which artists can improvise, resulting in the flourishing of frivolity, dedication, pride, and personal vision that has become how New York celebrates summer.
