The National Museum of the American Indian is the sixteenth museum of the Smithsonian Institution and it’s located within the historical George Gustav Heye Center, Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House.
It is the first national museum dedicated to the preservation, study, and exhibition of the life, languages, literature, history, and arts of Native Americans. Its collection of 800,000 works consisting of aesthetic, religious and historical significance was assembled by George Gustave Heye for which this particular center is named.
These collections span all major cultures & areas of the Americas and represent all major cultures & tribes of the United States and Canada as well as Middle and South America, plus the Caribbean.
