Maya Wiley Statement on Yankees’ Decision To Leave Staten Island

NEW YORK – New York City Mayoral candidate Maya Wiley released the following statement today following reports that the Yankees would end their partnership with Staten Island:

“This is a blow for Staten Islanders and puts a lot of jobs at risk when Staten Island and New York City need all the jobs and revenue we can get. Major League Baseball is based here in New York City and they should know how sad a day this is for Staten Island and how many jobs are now in jeopardy at a time when Staten Island and New York City desperately need them. The Staten Island Yankees have been a part of the Staten Island community for more than 20 years and have played at Richmond County Bank Ballpark since 2001, and if the Yankees don’t reconsider this decision then Major League Baseball should fully commit to playing professional baseball on Staten Island. Major League Baseball must help with New York’s recovery.”
