Mayor Adams Appoints Jessica Tisch as NYPD Commissioner
Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Jessica Tisch as the new commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), making her the second woman to lead the department in its 179-year history. Tisch, currently serving as commissioner of the Department of Sanitation (DSNY), will assume her new role on November 25. She follows Keechant Sewell, the NYPD’s first female commissioner, who was also appointed by Adams.
“Jessica Tisch is one of the most effective managers in our administration,” said Mayor Adams. “She will lead the greatest police department in the world to ensure New Yorkers are safe and feel safe while building trust with the public.”
Tisch brings nearly two decades of experience in public service, including 12 years at the NYPD as deputy commissioner of information technology. During her tenure, she introduced innovations such as the Domain Awareness System and the rollout of body-worn cameras. At DSNY, she led the city’s “Trash Revolution,” containerizing 70% of daily trash and expanding composting citywide.
In a statement, Tisch said, “It is my distinct honor to advance Mayor Adams’ vision of fighting crime, protecting all New Yorkers, and continuing to build public confidence and trust in the police.” She emphasized her commitment to supporting officers and implementing forward-thinking training and technology.
Jessica Tisch, a Harvard graduate and lifelong New Yorker, will lead the NYPD at a time when overall crime has been declining across the city. Her appointment reflects Adams’ focus on safety and modernization as priorities for the nation’s largest police force.
