Hell Gate Bridge


This railroad bridge which crosses over the Hell Gate (a strait in the East River separating Astoria Queens from Randall’s and Wards Islands) connects Astoria in Queens borough with Wards Island in Manhattan borough.

Construction on this bridge began on March 1, 1912 and ended and opened in September, 1916. It is maintained by Amtrak.
