Continuing an over half a century tradition of rich arts programming, The Riverside Theatre is proudly presenting NuDance 2013—a two-day program of innovative and cutting-edge performances by the next generation of pioneering dance artists, followed by a conversation led by dance historian and professor Charmaine Warren—on Friday, November 22and Saturday, November 23, 7:30 p.m. at the Theatre, 91 Claremont Ave. (bet. 120th & 122nd Sts.), Morningside Heights.
NuDance presents emerging choreographers who showcase new and original choreography that is not only innovative and cutting edge, but also thrilling to watch. In her review of a previous NuDance program, Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times stated, “…the selection of choreographers for the NuDance …was unusually good…The …summoned memories of the theatre’s history as a major presenter of dance.”
Following each performance, Charmaine Warren will lead conversations with the choreographers exploring the process and inspiration behind their presented works and also invite the audience to participate in the discussions. Participating choreographers/companies include: Jeremy McQueen the 2013 recipient of the Jeoffrey Ballet Choreographer of Color Award, Buggé Ballet; Cat Caliandro, Dance Iquail, Dash Ensemble and Oui Danse. Dance has always been an integral part of the creative offerings of The Riverside Theatre. From 1964 to 1984, the world-renowned Riverside Dance had a profound impact on the direction and development of modern dance in New York City. As a major presenter of dance, The Riverside Theatre played host to countless emerging dancers and dance companies, such as Bill T. Jones, Chuck Davis, Elisa Monte, Mary Anthony, Joyce Trisler, Erik Hawkins and Sachiyo Ito, who went on to become innovators in the modern dance world.
Originally named the Cloister Theatre, The Riverside Theatre was founded in 1960 on the belief that the arts can be a transforming power in peoples’ lives and is committed to serving as a catalyst for cultural connections and social change. The Riverside Theatre, located at the historic Riverside Church, produces work that promotes and deepens cultural and social awareness. Highlights from the past ten seasons have included: the Katherine Dunham Tribute in honor of her 96th birthday; [email protected] with young trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, one of the leading emerging artists on the jazz scene, a 25th Anniversary reading of the award winning play | film “Short Eyes;” the screening of The Rise & Fall of Jim Crow, in collaboration with Thirteen WNET and the National Council for Community & Justice; and the critically acclaimed production of Through the Night.
