    The Cathedral of St. John the Divine Celebrates the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

    • 11:00 am – 12:30 pm: Martin Luther King Day Choral Eucharist
    • 2:00 pm –  3:00 pm: Spiritual Sing with Alice Parker, St. James Chapel
    • 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Freedom Concert, St. James Chapel

    COST: There is a suggested donation of $20 for the 6 p.m. Freedom Concert

    The Cathedral of St. John the Divine will pay tribute to American pastor, activist and humanitarian, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a special Choral Eucharist led by minister and social activist The Reverend Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou. Following the service will be a Spiritual Sing with Alice Parker and a special Freedom Concert on Sunday, January 18, 2015, starting at 11 a.m.; Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street)

    The Choral Eucharist service, in commemoration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will include readings from his speeches and other writings as well as musical selections curated by Director of Music Kent Tritle. The Reverend Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou, Pastor for Formation & Justice at the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, Boston, will preach.

    Following the service, at 2 p.m., choral conductor, educator, and Artistic Director of Melodious Accord, Alice Parker, will present an hour of communal singing in honor of Dr. King. At 6 p.m., professional musicians from leading New York institutions will present a Freedom Concert in response to the cases surrounding Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Along with a wide range of classical and contemporary compositions for voice and instruments, the performers will share personal experiences, poetry and prose. This Freedom Concert is modeled after the many performances presented by the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King throughout her leadership in the Civil Rights movement. There is a suggested contribution of $20.
