Series Of Special Events During The February Mid-Winter Break
Presidents Day Workshops, Family Cooking Sessions and Football-Themed Activities Among Special Events Scheduled for
February 15 to 23, 2014
To celebrate the February Mid-Winter Break (February 15 to 23), the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) will offer a series of special events and activities during the school holiday. While usually closed on Mondays, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, located at 212 West 83rd Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, will be open on Monday, February 17 for Presidents Day.
Below, please find the highlights for February break—everything from Presidents Day activities to special events for Black History Month.
Black History Month
On Saturday, February 15 and Sunday February 16 at 3 and 4pm, kids ages 5 and up can learn about Coretta Scott King, the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a civil rights leader in her own right. Young visitors will learn about the award named for Coretta Scott King that is given to outstanding African-American writers and illustrators of children’s literature; after, they can design a children’s book in her honor. In addition, little ones (ages 4 and younger) can celebrate cultural unity by creating a unity wreath with their handprints (Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16 at 10am and 1pm). A special “Meet the Artist” series is planned for Saturday, February 15 at 2 and 3:30pm. Children ages 5 and up will work with artist Daniel “Kodaq Jonez” Morteh to create an original artwork using the medium of photography.
Presidents Day
On Monday, February 17 at 3 and 4pm, kids ages 5 and up will learn what it means to be the POTUS by illustrating a comic book about what they think it would be like to work with President Obama. At 10am and 1pm, kids under 4 can also learn about the role of the president by designing their own campaign button.
Family Chef Series
Bernard Ros, owner and executive chef of Paname Restaurant, leads the James Beard Foundation Family Chef Series on Wednesday, February 19 at 2 and 3:30pm. Ros will demonstrate creative ways to cook simple family recipes with fresh affordable ingredients. Tastings will be provided! Tickets are required (they are free with admission), and will be distributed one hour before each event at the Visitors Service Desk.
Celebrate NFL at CMOM
The “You Make the Call: Learn to be an NFL Official” exhibit has been extended through March and to celebrate, CMOM will be hosting special events and activities during the entire February break. Families can look forward to football-themed art projects like T-shirt designing and penalty flag making; daily dance parties with our “Zebra Dance” instructors; and an obstacle course with educator-led activities. Or take the West Side M7, M10, M11, or M104 to West 83rd St or the cross-town M79 and M86 to Broadway.
