    Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, Houston Ballet: Sylvia by Stanton Welch AM on Saturday, January 19 at 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm.

    Prior to the February premiere at Houston’s recently restored Wortham Theater Center, join artistic director and choreographer Stanton Welch AM as he shares his creative process for his new ballet Sylvia, set to Léo Delibes’s famous score, with costume and scenic designs by Jerome Kaplan and projections by Wendall K. Harrington. Company dancers including Jessica Collado, Karina González, Melody Mennite, Chun Wai Chan, Connor Walsh, Harper Watters, and Charles-Louis Yoshiyama will perform excerpts from the classic story of the powerful mythological heroine, the huntress Sylvia, and her love for a mortal shepherd, showcasing a constellation of figures from Greek mythology woven together in a tapestry of three love stories.

    In July 2003, the acclaimed Australian choreographer Stanton Welch AM assumed the leadership of Houston Ballet, America’s fifth largest ballet company, as artistic director. Since his arrival, Mr. Welch has transformed Houston Ballet by raising the level of classical technique, infusing the company with new energy, drive and vision; introducing works by distinguished choreographers to the repertoire; and attracting some of the world’s best coaches to Houston to work with the dancers.

    He has created works for such prestigious international companies as Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Royal Danish Ballet.

    Houston Ballet’s mission is to inspire a lasting love and appreciation for dance through artistic excellence, exhilarating performances, innovative choreography and superb educational programs.

    Described by The New York Times as “an exceptional opportunity to understand something of the creative process,” for over 34 years and in over 500 productions, New Yorkers have been able to see, hear, and meet the most acclaimed artists in the world, in an intimate setting unlike any other. Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, has championed new works and offered audiences unprecedented access to generations of leading creators and performers. Most performances take place in the Guggenheim’s intimate Frank Lloyd Wright-designed 285-seat Peter B. Lewis Theater.
