Back when I was still a theist, I left a religious service when it struck me as impious to claim to know God’s schedule. And wasn’t it a little cheeky for anyone to claim to know what God wanted? In our own way, I find that my fellow humanists, agnostics, and atheists sometimes share this trait of claiming to know more than we can know.

Whether there is a God or gods or not, I am convinced that neither you nor I are omniscient. Our challenge is to lead a committed life while affirming we don’t have, and we don’t need, all the answers.
