Each fall, poets and poetry lovers unite in New York City for a three-day celebration of poetry called Poets Forum. Organized by the Academy of American Poets, Poets Forum explores the ever-changing landscape of contemporary poetry in America through in-depth discussions with some of the most distinguished poets of our day, poetry readings, lectures, receptions, and more. The seventh annual Poets Forum will be held from October 24 to 26, 2013, on the campuses of New York University and The New School.
At this year’s Poets Forum, Chancellors of the Academy of American Poets will discuss topics such as “The Art of Teaching Poetry,” “Contemporary Practices of Ecopoetics,” and “American Poets Abroad,” and award-winning poet and human rights advocate Carolyn Forché will deliver the annual Blaney Lecture. New to the schedule this year, Kevin Larimer, editor in chief of Poets & Writers Magazine, will provide an overview of the publishing process for poets. In addition, attendees can follow in the footsteps of Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, W. H. Auden, and Marianne Moore on poet-led literary walking tours throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.
From the Poets Forum kick-off—a dynamic reading by the Academy’s Chancellors (including Mark Doty, Jane Hirshfield, Claudia Rankine, and C. D. Wright)—until the closing event—the American Poet Publication Party—Poets Forum is an inspiring and educational entry into the world of poetry for those who create and those who appreciate the living art.
