19th ANNUAL SUMMER SOLSTICE CONCERT

WITH GRAMMY®-WINNING musician PAUL WINTER

The Paul Winter Consort to Premiere New Work, “Morning of the Phoenix”

Saturday, June 21, 2014

4:30 AM– 7:00 AM

The Paul Winter Consort will celebrate the dawning of the summer during the 19th annual Summer Solstice concert on Saturday, June 21 at 4:30 AM, at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street, Manhattan.

Beginning in the pre-dawn darkness in the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, the Grammy®-winning ensemble, the Paul Winter Consort, will surround the audience and play continuously for two hours as the morning sun gradually illuminates the stained-glass windows of the Cathedral.

The Consort will premiere a new work – “Morning of the Phoenix” – inspired by the monumental bird sculptures, entitled Phoenix, that were recently installed in the Cathedral. Created by the renowned Chinese artist Xu Bing, these two majestic birds, which together weigh over 12 tons and measure 90 and 100 feet, respectively, are hanging in perpetual flight in the Nave of the Cathedral. The full glory of these astonishing birds will come alive with the light of this first sunrise of the summer.

“This year’s performance may well be our most revolutionary event yet in the Cathedral,” says Winter, “given the spatial placement of our musicians, the visual dimensions that will emerge, and the nature of our performing ‘partners,’ for we will be collaborating, in a real sense, with these two magnificent birds suspended above us and the audience.”

The exact moment of the summer solstice marks the dawn of the year’s longest day, a celebratory moment in the 19-year history of this milestone celebration.

Led by seven-time Grammy®-winning soprano saxophonist Paul Winter, the musicians will include Chris Brubeck, bass trombone; Paul McCandless, on oboe, English horn and bass clarinet; John Clark, French horn; Marcus Rojas, tuba; Tim Brumfield, on the Cathedral’s giant Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ; and multiple percussionists.

All are invited to a tea and coffee reception following the concert.

Tickets are available for $40.  For more information or to purchase tickets please visit http://www.stjohndivine.org/.
