Founded in 1969 by Puerto Rican educators, artists and community activities whom envisioned an educational institution that would reflect the richness of their culture.
El Museo del Barrio possesses an 8,000 collection of Caribbean and Latin American art. They range from pre-Columbian vessels to contemporary installations.
Also known as El Museo the museum can be found at the northern end of Museum Mile along Fifth Avenue and it specializes in Latin American and Caribbean art with an emphasis on works from Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican Community in New York City.
