On a warm, slightly overcast Saturday, May 13, 2023, New York City’s Upper West Side came alive with the vibrant sights and sounds of the second annual Japan Parade and Street Fair. The event, celebrating Japanese culture and the enduring friendship between Japan and New York City, drew thousands of participants and spectators to Central Park West.

The festivities commenced at 12:30 PM with an opening ceremony featuring dynamic drum performances by Soh Daiko. Dignitaries, including Mayor Eric Adams, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Assembly Member Ron Kim, and Senator John Liu, addressed the crowd, highlighting the significance of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and the strong ties between Japan and the city.

Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi served as the Grand Marshal, expressing her pride in celebrating Japanese culture in a city renowned for its diverse parades. Yours truly got  up close and greeted this most lovely lady. What a smile!

Following a ceremonial blessing, officials cut the ribbon to officially start the parade.

At 1:00 PM, the parade commenced at 81st Street, proceeding south along Central Park West to 67th Street. Over 2,500 participants showcased a rich tapestry of Japanese traditions and contemporary culture. Attendees, many dressed in kimonos and anime-inspired costumes, lined the streets, waving Japanese flags and immersing themselves in the festive atmosphere.

Concurrently, the Japan Street Fair took place on West 72nd Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The fair featured culinary delights from 20 Japanese restaurants, offering attendees a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine. Additionally, various games, cultural activities, and performances provided entertainment for all ages, fostering a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture.

The 2023 Japan Parade and Street Fair not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Japan but also reinforced the strong bonds between the Japanese community and New York City. The event’s success underscored the city’s commitment to diversity and cultural exchange, leaving attendees eagerly anticipating next year’s festivities.
