Event: The Can-Do Yard: WWII at the Brooklyn Navy Yard tour
Date & Time: Sunday 4/6, 5/3 and 5/24. 11am – 1pm.
Location: Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost: FREE for WWII veterans. $30 all others. Veterans, current and former military personnel and members of BLDG 92 receive a 10% discount.
Description: Turnstile Tours and BLDG 92 evoke the Yard during World War II on this interactive tour drawing from the experiences of the 70,000 wartime workers who made it the “Can-Do” Yard. Visitors will explore the role of New York City’s waterfront in the war effort and make connections between the Yard and famous battles of WWII. Highlights include the Naval Hospital campus, the Naval Film Exchange, a working dry dock, and legendary sites in the surrounding community. Event: Seasonal Photography tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard
Date & Time: Saturday, 4/19. 11am – 1pm.

Cost: $30. Members of BLDG 92 receive a 10% discount.
Description: A limited narration, visual journey around the Yard’s fascinating waterfront landscape. Photo enthusiasts can juxtapose its 19th century buildings against cutting edge green construction, natural landscapes with riverside vistas all nestled within a thriving 300-acre industrial setting. Guided bus tour offers several extended opportunities for shutterbugs to develop their own collage. Participants are eligible to enter an Instagram contest judged by professional Yard photographers. Event: Sustainable Industry and Architecture bicycle tour at the Brooklyn Navy Yard

Description: Explore the Yard’s transition from one of the nation’s foremost naval shipbuilding facilities to a national leader for sustainable urban industrial parks. Learn about its many green initiatives, including adaptive reuse of historic structures and materials, alternative energy projects, and sustainable manufacturing practices employed by some of its 330 businesses. Event: Private(i): A new immersive mixed-reality adventure at the Brooklyn Navy Yard

Description: Collaborative arts group Fixed Agency–this year’s BLDG 92 Visiting Artists–employs the walled Brooklyn Navy Yard complex to stage its most recent production, an investigation of personal relationships with state surveillance and the privacy vs. security debate. The year is 2020, a society of hyper-surveillance. Enter Private(i) — a series of unexpected encounters strategically designed to evoke 2014, a time when privacy still existed. Hidden within the sprawling industrial landscape of the Navy Yard, interactive modules invite participants to reconnect with their secret selves and rediscover the virtues of duplicity. Event: Urban Ecology Bus & Walking Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard

Description: Discover the natural world amid a thriving urban industrial park on this bicycle and walking tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Explore New York City’s waterways, terrestrial ecosystems and urban farms. Learn how Brooklyn Grange produces 20,000 pounds of vegetables each year on their stunning 65,000-square-foot rooftop farm. Hear about the health of the city’s waterways on a visit to an oyster restoration project led by a local school. Identify native plants, trees and wildlife taking refuge on the historic Naval Hospital campus and hear plans for a memorial park being developed by Brooklyn Greenway Initiative. Description: In the 19th century, Marines were dispatched from the Navy Yard to crack down on illegal whiskey distilling in what became known as the WHISKEY WARS. Today, Kings County Distillery is proudly making moonshine and more on premises. Join BLDG 92 and Kings County Distillery on a tour (and tasting!) that explores whiskey scandals of the past and the resurgence of the industry today. Event: BLDG 92 Presents A HARD DECISION: a staged reading and musical production

Description: A love triangle unfolds in Westley Thomas’ A Hard Decision—a story that provides insight into life during the Vietnam War and the universal experiences of those who go abroad to fight for freedom. Set in Staten Island in the 1960s, his work touches on love and war, family and friendship and the tough decisions we all have to make. Description: Jazz musician and the Navy Yard’s first African-American photography director passed away in 2012 at the age of 101. A Bed-Stuy local, his great American story and selections of his work—including his capture of the USS Constellation blaze, one of Brooklyn’s most disastrous—are now on view at BLDG 92. Description: In a new art installation and exhibit, four women working in the Yard today reflect on the experiences of women who entered its gates for the very first time seven decades earlier. Incorporating oral histories, sculpture and fashion, “Reflections on Rosie” explores the irrevocable transformation of women in WWII and celebrates the legacy of contemporary female entrepreneurs.
