The Can-Do Yard: WWII at the Brooklyn Navy Yard tour
Sundays 3/2 and 4/6. 11am – 1pm.

Cost: FREE for WWII veterans. $30 all others. Veterans, current and former military personnel and members of BLDG 92 receive a 10% discount.
Turnstile Tours and BLDG 92 evoke the Yard during World War II on this interactive tour drawing from the experiences of the 70,000 wartime workers who made it the “Can-Do” Yard. Visitors will explore the role of New York City’s waterfront in the war effort and make connections between the Yard and famous battles of WWII. Highlights include the Naval Hospital campus, the Naval Film Exchange, a working dry dock, and legendary sites in the surrounding community. “Little Tug” Reading and Workshop

In the 19th century, Marines were dispatched from the Navy Yard to crack down on illegal whiskey distilling in what became known as the WHISKEY WARS. Today, Kings County Distillery is proudly making moonshine and more on premises. A limited narration, visual journey around the Yard’s fascinating waterfront landscape. Photo enthusiasts can juxtapose its 19th century buildings against cutting edge green construction, natural landscapes with riverside vistas all nestled within a thriving 300-acre industrial setting. Guided bus tour offers several extended opportunities for shutterbugs to develop their own collage. Participants are eligible to enter an Instagram contest judged by professional Yard photographers. Jazz musician and the Navy Yard’s first African-American photography director passed away in 2012 at the age of 101. A Bed-Stuy local, his great American story and selections of his work—including his capture of the USS Constellation blaze, one of Brooklyn’s most disastrous—are now on view at BLDG 92. In a new art installation and exhibit, four women working in the Yard today reflect on the experiences of women who entered its gates for the very first time seven decades earlier. Incorporating oral histories, sculpture and fashion, “Reflections on Rosie” explores the irrevocable transformation of women in WWII and celebrates the legacy of contemporary female entrepreneurs.
