The Museum of Modern Art presents New Photography 2023, an exhibition that features the work of seven artists who are connected to the art scene in Lagos, Nigeria. The exhibition is part of MoMA’s New Photography series, which has showcased work by more than 150 artists worldwide since 1985. This edition is the first to focus on a specific art scene across the globe and the first to present the work of living West African photographers at MoMA.
The exhibition examines how these artists use photography as a social medium, challenging the notion of the photograph as document and experimenting with different forms and techniques. Some of the artists capture scenes of everyday life in Lagos, while others explore architecture, history, and personal experience. The exhibition aims to highlight the diversity and vitality of the photographic practice in Lagos, one of the most populous and dynamic cities on the African continent.
New Photography 2023 will be on view from May 28 through September 16, 2023 at MoMA’s Floor 2. The exhibition is organized by Oluremi C. Onabanjo, Associate Curator, Department of Photography, with Kaitlin Booher, Newhall Curatorial Fellow, and Samuel Allen, MRC Fellow, Department of Photography. The exhibition is supported by various sponsors and donors. Visitors can find more information about the exhibition and related events on MoMA’s website
