As Per Governor Cuomo’s Request: 3 UK Airlines Agree to Require COVID-19 Tests for Travelers Coming to NY

Three United Kingdom Airlines Agree to Governor Cuomo’s Request to Require COVID-19 Testing of Anyone Wishing to Travel to New York.

December 21, 2020- Governor Andrew Cuomo holds Monday Press Briefing

Delta Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic agree to add New York to the 120 countries that will do pre-boarding testing for UK Citizens visiting the state – due to the newly discovered & highly contagious strain of COVID-19 in Britain.

The news came in bits as Governor Andrew Cuomo updated New Yorkers throughout the day.

This all comes following the Governor’s expressed concerns yesterday over the Federal Government’s lack of response to the concerning news emanating from Britain.

During the Governor’s press conference this morning he spoke of the three airlines which are the only ones transporting people to New York’s airports.

“There are 3 airlines that come from the UK and fly in to our airports,” said the Governor. “Our airports are run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The 3 airlines are British Airways, Delta and Virgin Atlantic. They daily are bringing several thousand passengers per day. I am asking those airlines to add New York State to the list of the 120 countries that require tests before the flights leave the UK for New York. 120 countries do it, my request is simple: Please add New York to the list of 120 countries. Well, you’re not a country. I know that but as Governor of New York State, I have asked them to do that. We do have a public health emergency in existence in New York State.”

Mr. Cuomo first announced that British Airways had voluntarily agreed to the Governor’s request. Hours later he announced that Delta Airlines would be joining in the effort. Not long after we learned that Virgin Atlantic would be added to the two airlines in assuring that no one testing positive for Coronavirus would be allowed to fly to NY.

Later in the day, he appeared as a guest on CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.

When questioned on the subject by the host:

“… the people who now fly into New York will be negative, but we’ll have flights into Chicago, we’ll have flights into other parts of the country and then those people can get on flights and come back to New York or infect other states,” said the Governor. “This whole notion that any one state can protect itself was foolish from the beginning. New York has one of the lowest infection rates in the United States, but that doesn’t stop the virus from coming in from other states. “
