Akram Khan, Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Aakash Odedra

March 4 and 5, 2016

Aakash-Rising-by-Chris-Nash-2-as-Smart-Object-1New York, NY, November 17, 2015–NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts will present Aakash Odedra Company in the New York premiere of Rising, four solo dance works created especially for Aakash Odedra by celebrated choreographers Akram Khan, Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Odedra himself, on March 4 and 5, 2016 at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.

Rising was the debut presentation of Aakash Odedra Company in 2011 and has won numerous international awards and continues to tour extensively throughout the world. Rising is a richly diverse exploration of artistic development and the relationship between performers and choreographer.  Odedra creates a fresh, personal language that alternates between lyrical and graceful, brutal and raw, edgy and animalistic. This is the first time Rising has been performed in New York in its entirety.

Aakash Odedra’s choreography ranges from large-scale classical evenings, to contemporary works and opera.  Odedra was born in Birmingham, U.K., and trained in the classical Indian dance styles of Kathak and Bharatanatyam. He was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age and turned to dance as a means of self-expression. He formed Aakash Odedra Company in 2011 as a vehicle for commissioning solos and to develop his own choreographic work. Odedra’s choreography credits include James Brown: Get on the Good Foot, choreographed for James Brown at the Apollo Theater in New York (Bessie Award); the opera God’s Little Soldier; Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; and the closing of the London Cultural Olympiad in 2012.  aakashodedra.co.uk
