Saturday, June 1, 2013
Hosted by Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District, all-day event to include wedding walking tour, merchant discounts, mock weddings, puppy wedding costume contest, & more
New York, NY (May 6, 2013) – One of the city’s most vibrant boulevards will be showcased as a one-stop shop for the perfect wedding at the first-ever Atlantic Avenue Wedding Extravaganza on Saturday, June 1st. The all-day event, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, will feature walking tours and merchant discounts including dozens of the area’s wedding-related shops, salons, and venues, plus two mock wedding ceremonies, a puppy wedding costume contest, and more.
The event is presented by the Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District (AABID), which was founded last year to promote the long-term economic development of the area covering Atlantic Avenue from the BQE to 4th Avenue, as well as one block north and south on all side streets. The BID is leading efforts to create a thriving boulevard that preserves the Avenue’s rich history and diverse character while attracting both residents and visitors to its vast array of businesses — from its acclaimed antique shops and Middle Eastern restaurants to its ever-growing selection of boutiques, specialty shops, cafes, bars, galleries, bakeries, and more.
The day will kick off at 10:00 am with dual brunches at Atlantic Avenue restaurants M.O.B. and Bacchus. Registration for the day’s events will then begin at 11:00 am at Boerum Place between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, a tree-lined brownstone block in Cobble Hill which will be closed off for the Wedding Extravaganza. Starting at noon and continuing until 4:30, a wedding entertainment showcase will fill the block with live music from popular local bands.
At 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, couples preparing to tie the knot can take a Wedding Walking Tour which, in just a few blocks’ span, will cover their wedding needs from start to finish and a little bit beyond. Participants will have a chance to shop for gowns and lingerie, flowers, jewelry, photographers, hair and nail stylists, gift registries, cake bakers, and venues for bachelor and bachelorette parties, the rehearsal dinner, and the reception. They’ll even get to scope out their first home at a real estate agency and go shopping for kids’ clothes. Each tour participant will receive a pass book full of coupons from most of the venues on the tour. Both tours begin at Boerum Place and Atlantic Avenue.
To illustrate how the whole array of options can come together; the event will include a pair of mock wedding ceremonies free and open to all. At 1:30 pm, two couples – a man and a woman, and two women – will walk down the aisle at Roulette, a stunning art-deco performance space and event rental venue near the heart of downtown Brooklyn.
There will be a lighthearted interval at 3:30 pm, when dog owners are invited to dress up their pooches in bridal veils or coat and tails and parade them at the Adam Yauch Playground in all their nuptial glory for a Puppy Wedding costume contest.
An outdoor fashion show will take over Boerum Place at 4:30 pm, with vendors showcasing the full range of wedding fashions that can be found on Atlantic Avenue, from bridal gowns to bridesmaids’ dresses to attire for the well-dressed guest. The day will wrap up at 5:00 pm with a raffle drawing, when participants are invited to wind down with drinks at faux bachelorette parties staged at several of Atlantic Avenue’s beloved bars.
“As Brooklyn’s de facto ‘Main Street,’ Atlantic Avenue offers everything anyone would ever need to put together a perfect wedding,” said Josef Szende, Executive Director of the Atlantic Avenue BID. “We look forward to helping couples plan the first magical steps of their lives together, from registering for gifts to buying their first home – with the personal touch of a Brooklyn neighborhood where all the merchants know each other by name.”
