Historic Garden Weeklong Family Workshop
Monday August 5th – Friday August 9th
11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Children will learn why gardens were so important during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in this weeklong workshop. The majority of the time will be spent outside in the mansion’s historic sunken garden studying nature, planting and watering seeds. These activities will encourage children to be involved members of their community while learning about history through tours, hands-on projects and interactive learning. Children will make journals, leaf rubbings, terrariums and other projects they will get to take home with them at the end of the week.
The workshop is appropriate for students ages 6 and up and an adult learning partner is required to stay with the student. Registration for the week is FREE but advanced registration is suggested, call 212 923 8008.
The Pursuit of Beauty
Regency Make-Up Workshop
Thursday, August 8th 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Researcher, J. Leia Lima will a lead a discussion exploring women’s aesthetics, cosmetics, hair, corsets, gowns, and accessories starting from the 1790s into the 1820s. The presentation will be followed by a guided tour of the current MJM exhibitions, The Loves of Aaron Burr and The Arts of Beauty. This presentation will show you how to style yourself like Eliza Jumel, Josephine Bonaparte, and Jane Austen during the first quarter of the 19th century to prepare for the Regency Dance Workshop on Saturday, August 10th.

Regency Dancing
Saturday, August 10th 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Come learn and enjoy early nineteenth century dancing in the style of Jane Austen. Susan de Guardiola, dance historian will instruct all dances in the Morris-Jumel Mansion’s historic Octagonal Drawing Room. All dance levels welcome, beginner friendly. Ages 12 and up. Costumes, are encouraged, but not required. Ladies, please wear flats with a soft sole, no heels. Gentlemen please were shoes with a soft sole. Refreshments will be served. To learn about women’s dress and adornment in the early nineteenth century, come to the MJM program, The Pursuit of Beauty, 1790-1820 on Thursday August 8, 2013.

Jazz at the Mansion
Saturday, August 17th & Sunday, August 18th
2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Join us on the front lawn of the mansion for their annual Jazz concert presented in partnership with Marjorie Elliot and Parlor Entertainment. Feel free to bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks because you’ll want to stay for the full day of great jazz music!

Morris-Jumel Mansion is Manhattan’s oldest house. Built in 1765 by British officer Roger Morris, the house was later inhabited by George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights in 1776 and the Jumel family from 1810 to 1865. The house, now a museum, is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. The museum is located between 160th and 162nd Streets just east of St. Nicholas Avenue and can be easily reached via the C train to 163rd Street, the A train to 168th Street, or the M2, M3, M101 or M18 bus to 160th Street.
