    THE KEYS TO HEAVEN

Music of G. P. da Palestrina
Choir of St. Luke in the Fields
    David Shuler, Music Director

Thursday, January 25 at 8:00 pm
7:00 pm – lecture by Dr. Raymond Erickson

The Church of St. Luke in the Fields
    487 Hudson Street

‘Palestrina’s historical reputation resembles that of no other composer in the history of music.’  So thunders Grove’s  Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and that is an accurate portrayal. Palestrina is the best-known 16th-century representative of the Roman School of musical composition. He had a lasting influence on the development of church music, and his work is often seen as the culmination of Renaissance polyphony. The concert will feature G. P. da Palestrina’s mighty Missa Tu es Petrus, along with the motet on which it is based. The concert will also include well-known motets such as Sicut cervus, in addition some of his lesser-known jewels: the motets Caro mea, Improperium expectavit, and  Ego sum panis vivus, and the hymn setting  Veni creator spiritus.

This concert, and a subsequent recording, is presented in memory of Susan (“Susie”) Gale.
