While dining at Fraunces Tavern in 1774, John Adams wrote of “The most splendid dinner I ever saw, a profusion of rich dishes.” Given that Adams had a distaste for New York City in general, this was high praise indeed! Together with his beloved wife, Abigail, Adams enjoyed hearty and diverse cuisines in the colonies as well as in Europe. Together or separate, at home or abroad, this extraordinary couple humbly experienced an international style of cookery that inspired modern American culinary culture.
