The Cathedral of St. John the Divine Presents

Great Choir: Bach, Vivaldi, and Schütz

    Tuesday, March 15, 2016

    7:30 pm

Cathedral of St. John the Divine
1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street)

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine continues the 2015–2016 season of the Great Music in a Great Space concert series with Great Choir: Bach, Vivaldi, and Schütz, featuring three heart-wrenching pieces from the Baroque period on Tuesday, March 15th, at 7:30p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan.

Under the leadership of Kent Tritle, Director of Cathedral Music, this Lenten season meditation begins with the moving Musikalische Exequien of Heinrich Schütz, written in the midst of the devastating Thirty Years’ War; continues with the Stabat Mater of Antonio Vivaldi, featuring contralto Kirsten Sollek; and ends joyously with one of J.S. Bach’s greatest cantatas, Christ lag in Todesbanden.

Great Music in a Great Space is a series of concerts open to the public and inspired by world musical traditions. Relaunched in 2011, Great Music in a Great Space resumes the legendary Cathedral concert and recital series from the 1980s, which showcased the most exciting composers and performers in the world of choral and instrumental music, consistently drawing capacity crowds. The concerts introduce a broad array of cultural idioms and explore choral, organ and orchestral music from around the world as well as from the Anglican tradition.

Tickets start at $25.  For more information on this or to purchase tickets, please visit https://www.stjohndivine.org/visit/calendar/events/music/12965/great-choir-bach-vivaldi-and-schtz.
