    The Cathedral of St. John the Divine continues its 2014/15 season of the Great Music in a Great Space concert series with a Great Organ performance by Kent Tritle, Director of Cathedral Music, celebrating the works of both Johann Sebastian Bach and Maurice Duruflé, on Tuesday, November 18th at 7:30 pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan.

     

    Although separated by two centuries and vastly different in style, the organ works of both Johann Sebastian Bach and Maurice Duruflé represent technical achievement of the highest order. Kent Tritle brings his formidable musicianship to bear on two of Bach’s late preludes and fugues: the Prelude and Fugue in E minor known as the “Wedge,” BWV 548 and the Prelude and Fugue in B minor, BWV 544; and on Duruflé’s Suite, Op. 5, with its tour-de-force “Toccata.” Also included in the program will be the Magnificat octavi toni by Heinrich Scheidemann.

     

    The Great Organ, built in 1911 by Earnest M. Skinner, and enlarged and rebuilt in 1954 by G. Donald Harrison of The Aeolian Skinner Organ Company, brings together in one instrument the very best from two of America’s foremost organ-builders. Great Organ: A Recital Series is part of the series comprising Great Music in a Great Space, which brings world-class musicians each season to fill the reverberating spaces of the Cathedral with sound.

     

    Re-launched in 2011 under the leadership of Kent Tritle, Director of Cathedral Music, Great Music in a Great Space features significant choral masterworks presented in various acoustical locations within the world’s largest cathedral built in the gothic style. Great Music in a Great Space concerts feature the Cathedral Choirs and Orchestra, the Great Organ, and world-renowned soloists, and include the Cathedral’s signature Christmas Concert and New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace.
