The Cathedral Of St. John The Divine
Hosts 21st Annual Maundy Thursday Reading
Of Dante’s Inferno
Thursday, April 17, 2014
9:00 PM – 12:00 Midnight
Join hundreds of New York’s poetry lovers at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street) to celebrate the 21st annual reading of Dante’s Inferno on Thursday, April 17th from 9 p.m. to midnight.
Now in its 21st year, this cherished tradition has invited thousands of New Yorkers to descend into Dante Alighieri’s literary hellscape. The annual reading of selections from the Inferno brings listeners and participants into the “dark woods” of Dante’s haunting vision. This dramatic literary event takes place in the Crossing of the Cathedral, with selected Cantos read by honored guests, distinguished poets, eminent translators, visiting scholars, and Inferno reading regulars. The readers will read excerpts from Dante’s classic work during the Maundy Thursday vigil, the very hours Dante intended the events in the epic poem to take place. Joining Cathedral Poet in Residence Marilyn Nelson for this year’s reading will be noted authors, artists and performers, including actor John Ventimiglia and poet Eileen Myles.
The performance is free and open to the public. A $10 donation at the door is appreciated.
