A Dynamic Selection of New and Returning Galleries Will Further Solidify New York in March as the Finest Destination to Experience the Best of the Global Art Market

The Armory ShowNEW YORK – The Armory Show 2014, in its sixteenth edition, will host over 200 galleries from 29 countries exhibiting an array of significant modern and contemporary works. The 2014 fair, taking place March 6-9, will coincide with the opening of the Whitney Biennial, further establishing March in New York as a key moment on the international art world calendar. In line with its mission of providing an intelligent, dynamic platform for emerging and established galleries, The Armory Show will devote a special section of Pier 94 to a curated exhibition of contemporary art from China entitled Armory Focus: China. The fair will also launch the inaugural edition of Armory Presents, a new section devoted to solo and dual artist presentations by galleries less than ten years old. In its commitment to connoisseurship, The Armory Show – Modern has established a formal Selection Committee of leading dealers to help shape museum-quality presentations that touch upon many major movements of the twentieth century. The full list of participating galleries is available below.

The fair is divided into two main sections. The Armory Show – Contemporary, housed on Pier 94, welcomes returning exhibitors David Zwirner (New York, London), Sprüth Magers Berlin London (Berlin, London), Galerie Eva Presenhuber (Zurich), Massimo De Carlo (Milan, London), Lisson Gallery (London, New York, Milan), GALLERIA CONTINUA (San Gimignano, Beijing, Le Moulin), Kerlin Gallery (Dublin), Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York), Luciana Brito Galeria (Sao Paulo), Sean Kelly (New York), Victoria Miro (London), Praz-Delavallade (Paris), and Sies + Höke (Dusseldorf). An excellent roster of new exhibitors includes Lehmann Maupin (New York, Hong Kong), Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac (Paris, Salzburg), Almine Rech Gallery (Paris, Brussels), James Cohan Gallery (New York, Shanghai), Sikkema Jenkins & Co. (New York), Galería Elvira González (Madrid), Galerie Peter Kilchmann (Zurich), Edwynn Houk Gallery (New York, Zurich), 1301PE (Los Angeles), Aurel Scheibler (Berlin), Galeria Nara Roesler (Sao Paulo), Alison Jacques Gallery (London), Galleria Lia Rumma (Milan, Naples), Ratio 3 (San Francisco), CRG Gallery (New York), and Zach Feuer Gallery (New York).

The Armory Show – Modern on Pier 92 is dedicated to international dealers specializing in historically significant 20th century works. Returning exhibitors include Marlborough Gallery (New York), Galerie Thomas Modern (Munich), Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M. (Bologna), Alan Cristea Gallery (London), Marc Selwyn Fine Art (Los Angeles), Simon Capstick-Dale Fine Arts (New York), James Goodman Gallery (New York), Pace Prints (New York), Michael Rosenfeld Gallery (New York). Outstanding new exhibitors include Moeller Fine Art (New York, Berlin), Kunsthandel Joerg Maass (Berlin), Allan Stone Projects (New York), Valerie Carberry Gallery (Chicago), Galerie Bergamin (Sao Paulo), Maxwell Davidson Gallery (New York), and Mayoral Galeria d’Art (Barcelona).

The Armory Show is New York’s leading fair for modern and contemporary art. A seminal event in the annual New York arts calendar, the fair spearheads Armory Arts Week, a city-wide program of cultural events and exhibitions. Once again, the fair will comprise an acclaimed VIP program, a lively opening night benefit party at the Museum of Modern Art and the engaging Open Forum discussion series. Next year’s edition will also coincide with the opening of the 2014 Whitney Biennial in early March, further enhancing the line-up of Armory Arts Week events planned in partnership with New York’s cultural institutions, and attracting a wide scope of international collectors, curators, scholars, and press. For the third year running, the fair will be designed by Brooklyn-based architects Bade Stageberg Cox. Key enhancements include a refined floor plan, a more fluid connection between the Modern and Contemporary Piers, a fresh graphic identity, and improved amenities and dining options.

Further highlights for the 2014 Edition include:

    Curated Booths
Continuing the Armory Show’s mission to enhance the quality of gallery presentations and the visitor experience on site, solo booths and thematic curated exhibits will be prevalent across both piers. These include: Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle presented jointly by Galerie Thomas Schulte (Berlin) and Christopher Grimes Gallery (Santa Monica); Fernanda Gomes at Allison Jacques Gallery (London); Serge Alain Nitegeka at Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York); Elena del Rivero at Galería Elvira González (Madrid); Scoli Acosta at Laurent Godin (Paris); Atsushi Kaga at mother’s tankstation (Dublin); Jurgen Drescher at Mai 36 Galerie (Zurich); Lyonel Feininger at Moeller Fine Art (New York, Berlin); Wayne Thiebaud at Allan Stone Gallery (New York); Whitestone (Tokyo) will present a selection from the Gutai group; Mazzoleni Galleria d’Arte (Turin), REPETTO (Acqui Terme), Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M. (Bologna) will all display largely-unseen works from the Arte Povera and Transavantgarde movements; Galeria Bergamin (Sao Paulo) and Galeria Raquel Arnaud (Sao Paulo) will show Brazilian works emerging from the Constructivist and Neoconcrete movements; rare works by Sol LeWitt at James Barron Art LLC. (Rome); and a special selection of previously unavailable drawings and oil studies by Josef Albers directly from the holdings of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation at Alan Cristea Gallery (London).

    Armory Presents
This year marks the inaugural edition of Armory Presents on Pier 94, an expanded and re-branded take on Solo Projects, a section of the fair formerly dedicated to single artist presentations exhibited by young galleries. Armory Presents has broadened the scope of the original mission to provide exposure to the work of newly established galleries by granting additional display space and prominence to the section on-site. Additionally, projects will now include the work of up to two artists curated to reflect the nuanced programming of these cutting-edge international galleries. Participants include Ani Molnár Gallery (Budapest) showing Dénes Farkas and Athr Gallery (Jeddah) with Ahmed Mater and Nasser Al Salem, representing the first two galleries ever to exhibit at The Armory Show from Hungary and Saudi Arabia, respectively, along with C L E A R I N G (Brooklyn, Brussels) showing Harald Ankart; mor.charpentier (Paris) with Maria Jose Arjona and Teresa Margolles; Travess Smalley at Higher Pictures (New York); Jessica Dickinson at James Fuentes (New York); Grant Barnhart and Jeffry Mitchell at AMBACH & RICE (Los Angeles); Jessica Silverman Gallery (San Francisco) will show Hayal Pozanti; and Klaus Merkel and Nicolás Guagnini at Galerie Max Mayer (Dusseldorf).

    Armory Focus
The curated section of The Armory Show on Pier 94 highlights the gallery and artistic landscape of a chosen geographic region. For the fifth Focus edition, Philip Tinari, Director of The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, will curate Armory Focus: China, shining new light on the country’s contemporary cultural practice. In recognition of the dynamism of the Chinese art scene, The Armory Show will present an exciting selection of 17 galleries, many of whom will be exhibiting outside of Asia for the first time, including Beijing Commune (Beijing) showing Zhao Yao; a collaborative presentation of Zhang Ding by Galerie Krinzinger (Vienna) and ShanghART (Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore); He Xiangyu at White Space (Beijing); Chambers Fine Art (Beijing, New York) presenting Zhao Zhao; Chen Shaoxiong, Wang Luyan, and Zhao Liang at Pékin Fine Arts (Beijing, Hong Kong); Madein (Shanghai) showing Lu Pingyuan; and Nadim Abbas at Gallery EXIT (Hong Kong).

Tinari remarks: “This section will showcase both the dynamism of a new generation of Chinese artists and the vigor of the country’s homegrown gallery scene. Armory Focus: China marks the most comprehensive presentation of current art from China to be mounted in New York since the early 2000s.”

A full list of Armory Focus: China projects and programming will be available in the new year.

    Artist Commission
In honor of Armory Focus: China, Xu Zhen has been chosen as the 2014 Commissioned Artist and will lend the fair his graphic identity through printed ephemera and a specially commissioned limited edition. Xu Zhen, a “chameleon of concept,” has built an extensive body of work that includes video, installation, performance, and photography. From theatrical merry pranks to quieter works playing on human sensitivity, Xu Zhen has developed a repertoire confronting social-political taboos within the context of contemporary China and beyond.
