The Cathedral of St. John the Divine presents the Cathedral Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 10 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street),Manhattan. The Cathedral Choirs will join forces under the leadership of Kent Tritle, Director of Cathedral Music and one of America’s leading choral conductors. This signature event is one of many comprising the 2016–2017 season of Great Music in a Great Space.
This year’s concert centers celebrates France with Francis Poulenc’s Organ Concerto & Four Christmas Motets. Poulenc’s stunning organ concerto gives the Great Organ a star turn, while his Four Motets evoke the mystery of the Christmas miracle. Marc Antoine Charpentier’s charming In Nativitatem Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Canticum tells the Christmas story through a Baroque lens, with angels and shepherds abiding. The audience joins to sing favorite Christmas carols and the Cathedral Choristers will adorn the program with seasonal selections by Willcocks, Britten, Rutter and Fraser, accompanied by harp.
