    Redefining Preservation for the 21st Century: A Museum of the City of New York Symposium

    Organized to mark the 50th anniversary of New York City’s landmark law, the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibition Saving Place: 50 Years of New York City Landmarks will launch with “Redefining Preservation for the 21st Century,” a multi-disciplinary symposium exploring the challenges and the opportunities of the preservation movement today and in the future.

    Join Roberta Brandes Gratz, Urban Critic and Journalist; Michael Kimmelman, New York Times Architecture Critic; Robert A. M. Stern, FAIA, Founder Robert A.M. Stern Architects & Dean, School of Architecture, Yale University Vishaan Chakrabarti, AIA, Principal, SHoP Architects & Director of CURE, Columbia University; Steven Spinola, President, Real Estate Board of New York; and moderator  Adele Chatfield-Taylor, former President and CEO of the American Academy in Rome, as they examine how preservation shapes and strengthens our neighborhoods and our city as a whole.

    “Saving Place and the history of the landmarks law underscores how civic and business leaders, grass roots activists, and design professionals have come together to create a contemporary New York City that blends old and new in a dynamic urbanism,” said Susan Henshaw Jones, Ronay Menschel Director of the Museum of the City of New York. “As we celebrate the law’s 50th anniversary, this exhibition and symposium is not just about preserving the past, it is also about how landmarks are a vital contribution to the city‘s future for generations to come.”

    Symposium tickets are $20 Museum Members, $25 Students/Seniors, and $35 General Public. Price includes free admission to the opening reception afterwards at the Museum (1220 Fifth Avenue) for Saving Place.
