    Racial Literacy in Schools

    Sunday, December 13, 11:00 am

    Mariama Richards

At the New York Society for Ethical Culture

    2 West 64th Street

Are children colorblind? Is nine years old too young to discuss race? How do students understand concepts about race and ethnicity? Last year Ethical Culture Fieldston School launched Conversations About Race for 3-5th grade students.  This program was created in order to provide opportunities to discuss race and racial identity in affinity group settings. This talk will review some of the research and thinking that prompted its creation.

Mariama Richards serves as the Director of Progressive and Multicultural Education at Ethical Culture Fieldston School. At ECFS Mariama is charged with supporting professional development, monitoring the scope and sequence of curriculum, and supervising equity and justice initiatives pre-k through 12.  As a member of the senior administrative team, Mariama works to ensure that the mission of the school remains a central consideration throughout every aspect of the school community.
