The Cathedral of St. John the Divine will celebrate the opening of the newly installed art exhibition, Phoenix: Xu Bing at the Cathedral on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 2:00pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street).
The Cathedral will host storytelling, creative workshops and vertical tours for visitors of all ages throughout the day on March 1. The official opening ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm, with a performance by the Jook Lum Tong Long Southern Praying Mantis Lion Dancers, celebrating the arrival of Phoenix with traditional dance from Southern China choreographed by Master Norman Chin.
A highlight of the afternoon will be the appearance of tightrope master and Cathedral Artist in Residence Philippe Petit, performing The Song of the Phoenix: a Walk in Humility.
Joining Petit, fellow Artist in Residence Paul Winter will give the majestic birds voice with the music of his soprano saxophone. Veteran artist and renowned puppeteer Ralph Lee will collaborate with Cathedral Director of Music Kent Tritle and the Cathedral Choir for a rendition of Meditation of Li Po (701-762 A.D.) by Stephen Paulus. Members of the Big Apple Circus family will add their brand of magic. A musical interlude will feature pianist Diyi Tang performing a piece by Wang Jianzhong, A Hundred Birds Paying Respect to the Phoenix 百鸟朝凤.
Closing the afternoon will be Abdel Salaam with members of his Forces of Nature Company, bringing their ecstatic dance from Western Africa to the Cathedral.
